Grumpy what componets were used in the old RayJay
Turbo Big Block Chevies.
Most common used in offshore boats & related watercraft racing.
I recall power output in the 700 Hp range rumored.
Had to run on pump gas because largeboats hold 100-300 gallons of gasoline fuel.
Were they all 366 & 427 Tall deck engines ?
I have heard that before.

I found old articles on the HO Racing Turbocharched Trans Ams & Turbo Macho Trans Ams.
455 Poncho installed a few. No good power confirmation data but I have heard 600-650 HP with Q-jet carb, Single Turbo ,& no intercooler.
Smog Era 400 &455 engines.
Net is down. Have to share article & Pictures later.
Ground breaking Tech for 1976-79.

Martin turbo kits used a trick vacuum operated intake manifold that left the carb in the stock location and was actually a draw thru setup.

however since honeywell invented turbocharching internal combustion engines i could confidently say they (in the form of garrett) probably make the most reliable with the most data available... runner up would be holset for the simple fact that there are no compressor maps for their turbochargers leaving you to take a scientific wild ass guess as to which one would work best in your application.

however alot of companies have been popping up lately modifying the borg warner series of turbos and currently i dont think anyone makes more power than borg warner or has such an efficient design as their EFR series of turbos.

if you want to turbocharge a big block theres plenty of literature on the subject. i would start reading Maximum Boost by corky bell (i can mail you a copy if you dont feel like buying it) and Gale Banks basically bridges the gap between the primitive setups we are talking about above and the new high power technical crazy shit we see all over the internet and the track today. he did alot with big blocks and broke down alot of barriers in turbocharged street cars for the masses.

the pinnacle of big block turbo power has to reside in the lap of the guys at nelson racing engines tho, they consistently put out reliable 2000 hp motors.... but you have to understand, money is no object there. and if you want to consistently play at that level... you gotta pay.

back to the original question martin made turbo kits for big and small block chevy, and BOP motors too (i believe the picture i posted is an oldsmobile motor

One of my favorite places to day dream on you tube they have some videos also. Absolutely sick if you have an extra 25,000 to 75000 laying around.

yes, quite a few years ago there was an article, I can,t seem to find right now where a guy built a 4.5" bore big block with a 3.5" stroke custom crank, and 18 degree heads (445 CID)and used twin turbos to make a high rpm big block with a solid roller cam, that came close to 3000hp or more running and inter-cooled alcohol ,engine, that had to be 15-20 years ago, so you know there is far better technology now

800-1000 Hp is what I would call safe limit for any stock framed Unibody or Full perimeter frame car Phil. Really rollcage required at 500-550Hp.
My 70 TA is too valuable to destroy.
Next month marks 20 years owning it.
Sept 02, 1994 I brought it home.
I was 24 years old.

High Performance Pontiac Magazine got shut down Phil.
Its no more.
Existed since 1979. Original Thunder Am.
GM HIGH TECH & 5.0 Mags gone too.
Economy still bad.
Greatest names in Pontiac Racing was on board HPP.
That Fucker BamBam.
I hate him Phil.
Damn fuck. Drop dead.

well fortunately theres alot of kknowledge still floating around on the internet and in book form that you can pick up without the car magazines. just gotta stay in touch with the guys who are leading the industry and finding out new ways to make old motors go hard. 1000 hp is definitely doable with a big block 454 or bigger. using twins can be cheaper than a single turbo (because singles for big cubes = big $$$) if you shop around theres bargains to be had.

I am not attempting a Single or Twin Turbo Pontiac 455-482 ci or 427-496 Tall Deck BBC Without your input Phil .
That 427 Tall Deck is a Huge lump of iron like a Pontiac 455.
Tall Deck I think could be pushed safely to 1500 Hp.
Feel better if I had a BRC 4340 Crankshaft or Crower.

Pontiac 455 has an extremely stiff strong crankshaft.
Same basic layout as 389's Mickey Thompson had in his Challanger 1 back in 1959-60 & broke 406mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
10 miles flat out each way.
Torturous abuse for any engine.
Stroked 389's. 2 were 410's.
Other 2 engines were the 1st 455's.
Supercharged, Nitromethane & Hillborn injected, Vertex. Magneto fired all.
750-1,000 HP each engine.

Phil,
HEY WHAT TURBO FORUM ARE YOU ON EXACT ??

Been Researching in my own.
A few Pontiac 455's Turbos done.
Blocks are Extemely strong, good for 800 HP. Hardblock 1/3 fill good for 1,000 + HP.
Stock Nodular Cranks stronger than any by far.
Over 1,000 HP.
Crower Titanium Rods I have rated to 2,000 HP @ 8,500 RPMS.
Best in the World Bar none.

Read of a 1967 2-Bolt 400 GTO Twin Turbo pushed to 1400 HP.
Many times Racing.
Stock Block & crankshaft.

1/2 " inch fasters used on mains & heads on Pontiac V8 all since 1955.
I knew tough but exceeds all I had known prior.

tread carefully and read alot.... theres lots of conflicting information on there as technology gets better and better and people dicover new ways to improve turbo science... i strictly learn from peoples builds, if they put a car in the 8's then i take their word that they know what their talking about, everyone else is just bench racing.

That's where I was today Phil.
Reading threads back in 2005-2007.
Pontiac guys are hush hush on the Poncho forums on Turbo Science used exact.
Just reading for now.
Think the BBC & Tall Deck BBC could see limits raised too.
