I know where to look on Chevy and Ford but on Pontiac? I want to see if I have the original engine so where is the VIN code on the Poncho blocks
 
On the Front of the Block Passenger Side. Right above the water pump timing cover Richard .

Ok this is what I got on the head above and left of the timing cover:

058146 YC. Doesn't match my vin. Which is 252678X103756 so I wonder what I have for the engine?
The heads have a 36 with what looks like a pointer between the 3 and the 6. And there is another number "1017". (Looks like)

It can be confusing ID ing Pontiac V8 engines to new comers.

You found the engine production sequence number.

YC Could be 1968 Pontiac 400ci 2-bbl B-body Catalina.
290 HP Rated.
 
Grumpys Chart above I recalk.
1968 #15 Heads.
400ci 2bbl with 1.96" intake Valve Heads.
High Velocity with Decent airflow.
Why it Runs Potent with a 2-bbl.
Perfect match for Now.
 
Well the weight is correct.

The axle code, which is a two-character code, is stamped on the front passenger side axle tube to the left of the carrier case. For example, axle code PX G70621 found on a 1977 Trans Am would be deciphered as; PX = Ring and Pinion Gear size 3.23(shown below), G = Manufacturer, Chevrolet Gear and Axle, 062 = Julian date which is the 62nd day of 1977 or March 1, 1977, 1= is the shift when built, in this case 1st shift.

It just occurred to me that I didn't get the lower block numbers yet, so it may yet be an original motor, I hope so.
I wonder if it can be seen easier from the bottom? I'll check shortly.
