Powder coating question:

I have a TPI intake system that I'm about ready to drop off at the local powder coaters. What I'm looking for is a coating that will be close to looking like polished aluminum (without going through all that pesky work of actually polishing it).

Here's what the intake looks like. I want to powder coat the lower manifold, the runners and the plenum.

Is this doable?

Thanks.

My bad, Grumpy. What I meant to say (I've since edited my post) is that I want to powder coat thos pieces, not polish. Sorry for the confusion.

powder coating will require some clean-up, degreasing, and minor pollishing if you want to get a first class results
just like you can,t paint over a greasy intake , you can,t powder coat one in that condition either, but you can get a far smoother and cleaner appearance without the full effort in simply pollishing and get more corroasion resistance with powder coating.

let me get a pro LIKE MIKE at http://www.powdercoater.com/home.html
to answer this also

btw theres some nice pictures here

Hey Skidz,
This is very doable, and they look awesome when complete. The way to get the best coating with parts like these is fully dissasemble all the pieces, anything that moves or anything that will potentially melt in the oven. There are many "polished aluminum" like colors, 99% of them require a top clear coat as well. But as far as cleaning the parts before you take it to your powder coater, you may want to call and ask them what thier preference is, we all have diffrent ones. In my shop all I ask is that you dissasemble it as far down as possible, and take the majority of the oil and grease off of it before you bring it to me. The best results will come with a light media blasting to etch and clean the surface, which alot of coaters do not do, alot of them do a checmical wash that removes surface contaminates, but does not give it good durability. Remember that a shitty powder coating job is no better than a rattle can spray paint, so who ever you take it too make sure it is preped right before they coat it. There are also areas on these parts that should not be coated. Meaning the mating surfaces and any threads. This is important for the gasket sealing and fitment, so make sure that they do that as well. Becasue with these types of parts it is very important you dont want chipped off powder coating to end up in your engine  not good. Here at my shop you dont have to tell us to do any of that since we are all car guys who build so we know what you want. Like I always say cheap powder coating isnt good and good powder coating isnt cheap, so do your due dilligence when chooing your coater.

Mike,

Thank you very much. I already have the intake broken down into the individual components.
I want to get all the old gasket material scraped off before I take them to the coater.
Thanks for all the advice. I really didn't even know enough about the process to know the
proper questions to ask. I feel more more prepared now for when I speak to the coater.

Thanks Again.

No problem Skidz. If that guys ruins your parts let me know and Ill be glad to do them for you :)... Just kidding Good luck and post some pics when thier done.
