heating bearings enought to expand them is usually a BAD IDEA!
yes if your careful it can be done if the temps are limited to under about 275F-300F for a breif time, but
it can burn off protective finnishes
it can distort the clearances
it can ruin the heat treatment
it can warp the surface finnish
it can ruin the bond to the backing material,
it can cause soft spots in the surface, etc.

you can usually find these on sale for under $120

yes its a total p.i.t.a. to take the differential out to work on it, but at times its the smart choice.

Obviously if your only running the temp up with something like a hair drier or a heat gun to 140f-250f or so its most likely having zero bad effect, but by 400F it can easily cause problems in some cases, but anytime you say HEAT,IT UP!
out comes the propane or acetylene torches, IVE gone the reverse route in most cases and packed cranks, axles etc in dry ice for an hour or so then spray them with a fine mist of oil and in many cases you can slip bearing into place if the clearances are just a bit tight.

Btw I haven’t (VOLUNTARILY) used or advised the use of pressed pin pistons, in connecting rods for years, IVE always preferred bronze bushed rods with free float piston pins and dual spirolocs on each end of the wrist pins or dual internal spring clips

like I stated earlier in the thread above.........

I did a few checks and MOST synthetic bearing seals and greases fail in the 300F-350F range

"once again,NICE WORK!
glad to see someones thinking things thru and not just stuffing replacement stock components at the rebuild"GRUMPYVETTE

GTR1999 posted this

"There are some options rebuilding a diff and one is using a solid sleeve.
The stock crush sleeves are ok for st car but if you want the added ins of using a sleeve that won't compress you use a solid sleeve. Norval machined up his in the past and I used the drawn solid tube sleeve a lot because they're better then the stock ones. The one thing I never liked was they were seamed, probably never be a problem but I found some DOM tube that is freaking harder then my head! This was a treat to machine but I set it up to dial in with the shims the drawn come with. Just something I had time to play around with. The material cost and labor probably will be higher then the drawn but the piece of mind is nice. You can add this to the diff index as well it may help someone in the future. I'll use these with the 12 bolts for some added strength. Keep in mind Tom never used any sleeves in the 12 bolts, just loctite. I'll machine the sleeves.

Here are the sleeves and the DOM tube
