ROCHESTER 2G HELP, part one:

This probably isn't the best place to ask----on a corvette forum, but gumpy introduced me to this forum so here goes..........

i need as much info as humanly possible on the rochester 2G carburetor.

Please provide any/all links possible concerning this carb. i know this is not an easy task as no-one gives a crap about this carb anymore except in tri-power configurations but even then, multi-carb setups are just not that popular anyways.

1) i'm having problems keeping the engine running below 1000rpms which sounds like the timing is too retarded. (The engine, does however, sound pretty decent for the brief time i can get it to run at 1200rpm or above.)

Current plan for that would be to keep advancing timing little-by-little before each attempt to start. i have a battery charger, so testing like this is not nessesarily a problem.
My only concern about this first stategy is that i don't want to damage the starter; Is 15 seconds of cranking per minute ok? In other words, i'm letting the starter cool off for at least 45 seconds before cranking a maximium 15 seconds per try.

2) How do you actually start a car equipped with a 2G?

a) when cold?

b) when the engine has run for a few secs but shuts down? So, the engine is still "cold" but not as cold as if not run for a few hours. Also, i'm ASSuming in this condition fuel has run thru the carb.

c) When warm?

this might help

BTW you do realize that the center carb has ALL the idle circuit to run the engine and the end carbs are only used after the center carb has opened to about 1/3rd throttle when they open and act like a 4 barrel carbs secondaries, so you tun and adjust ALL idle functions, the end carbs need to be fully closed at idle up to about 1/3rd throttle, and setting the end carb accelerator pump shot linkage on max cures some common bog problems, and each carb needs a separate fuel feed line of about 3/8" from a decent sized fuel log with a good fuel pressure regulator with a return style regulator set up to maintain about 5 psi at the fuel log, feeding the carbs that they were never fitted with in factor set ups, and a high flow fuel filter and decent pump is mandatory.
those silly little air cleaners with the screens and foam are RESTRICTIVE, get or fabricate a decent common air filter design

Thanks for the links. i'll try some of the suggestions in there.

i got the engine running and it runs pretty smooth at all rpms; No problems there.

The problem i'm having now is i'm having difficulty starting it regardless if the engine is cold or warm.

The way i can get it start now is i'll put the pedal to the floor and when i sense the engine will "catch," i release the pedal and the engine usually does start.

Then i will have to give the engine gas while the engine really runs rough and noisy for about 1-2 seconds then it immediately gets really smooth and quiet like a sewing machine and then i can let off the gas and it will idle smooth with no problems.

i think there are at least two possible conclusions:

1) i don't know how to correctly start the engine with this carburetor (very likely)?

2) There may be a flooding problem?

Its more likely you don,t have a choke, from your description IM assuming you've removed the choke from the carb? and your not getting enough fuel at first,
try this ,adjust the center carb so the accelerator pump give its max duration shot as its opening, after that's fixed attempt to start the car first by spinning the engine with the starter to build fuel pressure in the carbs, STOP floor the accellerator several times with the engine off, then try to start the car with the carbs closed and your foot off the throttle

personally IVE always liked the tri-power holley set up for looks
