if you have a manual muncie transmission ,in your muscle car, chances are good that your either using either the factory shifter or something like the hurst shifter thats been used as an upgrade of decades
theres dozens of different designs and even competing brands of shifters

most hurst shifter balls sell for $30-$60 thats INSANE in the case of the ones that don,t have internal switches , any one with a decent drill press and some J&B weld and a brass or steel female thread insert can turn darn near any object into a shifter nob.
I know several guys that converted pool/billard balls

I have no idea why, but at one time these were popular

If you ever thought about pulling your Hurst shifter apart for a clean and lube but were apprehensive about it, let me put your mind at ease. I just finished doing a servicing on my Super Shifter 3 and it was very simple. It will not blow up in your face and send springs flying across the room (I think we've all been there)

You just have to pry out the end plate (with one of the stop bolts) and then slide out the tube that the big attachment bolt goes through. After that all the internals just slide out as an assembly. I set it on the bench and numbered each part with an automatic punch as I removed them one by one. The mechanism that the stick bolts to with the springs for the side to side action stays assembled. Clean everything up in the parts washer and reassemble. I just used regular bearing grease. Use a big phillips head screwdiver to align all the components and then slide the tube back in. That's the only slightly tricky part. Then just pop the end plate back in and you're ready to go.

Finally I like to use washers under the clips when reassembling the linkage. It makes for a much tighter action and is less prone to rattle.

Hope this helps,

Johnny
if you are lucky...you can find brass plated washers at the plumbing supply area, which will fit over the 3/8" adjuster button [on each rod]. that will tighten up the slop between the button and the shifter/trans arm. sometimes you will need to put the washers on the clip side of the button. using the Hurst metal bushing will help. also you can use a 3/8" nut to 'jamb' the rod and the button. you may have to grind some off the face of the nut to get the flat next to the adjacent rod, for clearance. or try a different nut. not all nuts are threaded the same. using the 'jamb' nut will help keep the rod in it's proper relationship with the trans arm and the shifter plate. a tip, if your rods are 3/8" fine threaded, use rod nuts from a SBC 3/8" rod bolt.
i have my race car that way and i have never had any trouble in almost 40 years.
make sure you have the stainless steel flex plate on the bottom, which helps keep dirt from entering the shifter head.

What about floor shifters for auto tranny? I am about to get my new tranny built and what is a good floor shifter for a TH 400?

What kind of shifter do you want Bob, detent, gate or ratchet? Does it need to
fit the stock console? Does the cable need to exit the front or rear of the shifter
or there is hard linkage type? Also it can mount to the transmission or it can bolt
to the floor of the car.

Many many variables to point to one perfect shifter. I have the B&M Unimatic
shifter that I don't like, but again it's their cheapest shifter. I'm thinking for my
application I would like a ratchet shifter....slap it and no matter what you do it
can only shift one gear at a time. But I'm sure there is a down side to them as
nothing is perfect.

I would prefer it mount to the tranny with hard linkage, and probably a gate or rachet. Don't have a console, I am going to make one.

Summit & Jeg's has one I like summit # ats6400dm for 239.99, Jeg's has it(625 ats640odm) for 269.99. I will use price match maybe both have free shipping. It's a Lokar shifter!
