Single Wire Alternator, No Output?

Before going to full serpentine, GM remedied this problem by changing only the v-belt pulley groove
to flat multi-ribbed (I believe 87 and up f-bodies use it). I will try to find a picture.
If you need to replace your pulleys anyways, this could be a good option.

I do not recall any CS144 factory installed with a single V-belt groove pulley.
1 st use was around 1988 on the Chevy Caprice with police package.
TBI 350 RPO Code LO5 engine.
Same engine used in 1987-1995 Chevy Trucks & Suburban and upgrade was a 454 TBI.
All had Serpentine Belts stock.

The Baddest Alternator prior was made by Ford.
The 100 Amp Blueback.
A few upgrades and it was good for 200 amps.
My Late bud Bill built them for the Ambulance service companies local and deep into Chicago.
Had his own electrical Auto repair shop.
In an ambulance if the alternator quits with all lights on ( No LED's lights back then all incandescent lighting) running down the road in rural areas or in the city of Chicago, the engine dies.
Batteries hooked in parallel go dead fast.
So the patient being transported rescued Dies.
Big Lawsuit.
Every GM alternator failed to meet the standards.
Only the Ford Blue Back Alternator was allowed.

I had a Blueback on my old 1973 Lincoln Mark IV 460.
I jump started a few Diesel Semi Trucks with it in the dead of winter back 2001-2004.
Never died that alternator.

I worked on a few Homeland Defense Vehicles at one old job.
On that Ford truck there was 3 Big Ford Alternators on the Ford Diesel V8.

Good advice above, many Mahalos....

This truck celebrates it's 20th year on the road this year. The motor has been no problem at all, but it has burnt through several th400 trannies, the current version is holding up pretty well, running Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R Radial 31X18R15LTs on a 9" I narrowed to fit after modifying the frame extensively, it will break the tires loose whenever I want. I ran a pretty stock alternator with no problems for many years, but the last two "stock" alternators from Napa sucked bad....
Funny, I didn't know this, Napa sells me an alternator, supposed to be like the old stock ones I ran for years, and I can't get voltage !!!
So I take it back, they give me another one, samo samo....
Can't get the daggon thing up to even 12 volts, heck, with the hi beam lights on, can't get it to 11 volts....
So I take it back, it's faulty, I want a refund, "oh, we don't do refunds on these, I can give you another one to try, but we don't do refunds....."
"I just tested it, I didn't drive it around, just testing, and it failed my tests, it doesn't produce the stated voltage...."
" I want a full refund, as I am going to look elsewhere for an alternator, one that works...."
"No, we consider it used once it walks out of the store, no refunds...."

So that battle with my local Napa just started, and I'm again running the 140 amp with 13+ volts showing on the voltmeter....
And no screeching belts...
Yet....
Aloha all...
Willy

That just makes it worse, I sure wish I had mine running !!!

Love the dash, did you cut that out yourself?

Yes, I did, I carefully made up a template, used it in my '55 Chevy 4x4 truck also....

Is that the same 55 Chevy, not only does the dash shape look different, but obviously the color ?

What kind of tools did you use to make that dash, shape, finish, holes ??? Looks like something you
could buy for $250, for the plate. Supply your own gauges.

BTW, is that really you holding that BOY magazine ??? ..... He he he !!!

1/8" aluminum plate, hole saw for the holes, sanded with a belt sander, don't remember the grit, might have been 800, then clear coated.
Hi beam in the center of the four gages, outside of those each side turn signal lights, on each side of the speedo, left side is 4 wheel drive engaged, right side is low range engaged.
Tranny in this truck is a 4L80E w transfer case. Shifter for the transfer case is on the side of the floor panel in the foot well, I used an old torque wrench I had and worked up linkage over to the transfer case. A fun project.

Naww, the "playboy" is one of my kids, I just love that pic....
Of course he's about 40 now, he loves that pic also...
That's me, below, this truck works, it's not a show truck....
