hi grumpy, long time no see, sorry i have been gone so long.
my good friend john pike sold me his dad's ( deceased air force vet jim pike, my old friend) 87 gmc short bed pickup.
john had installed stock TPI on the stock 305 that the truck had. he did a very nice job as he is an engineer and great engine man.
i drove it for a month and something siezed in the 305, so, time for a new motor.
i bought a built, balanced sb 400 from a hotrodder, he used the engine in a heavy 60 impala pro street car and ran low 13s with a tunnel ram, low miles, well cared for. has ported L98 heads, since that was the fad back in the early 90s. at this point, i would like to forego replacing the heads even though i know there are much better flowing options out there now.
i realize the stock tpi would be very weak on this 400, would like to go to a stealth ram. by the way, the former engine owner does not recall the cam specs, but says it was a comp cams grind, possibly a more radical grind , since in his experiments he found a tunnel ram with two 450 holleys to run harder than a single large 4 barrel. in other words, probably a cam geared to high flow at the higher rpm ranges. i can measure the cam specs if needed.
since i do not have 2600 to spend on the holley setup , i have been looking on craigslist and have seen a few good setups sell recently, but missed out on them.
there is currently a guy in vegas who is selling this:

The car I was going to use the kit on had a bit of a head gasket problem(edit) I bought this kit used off of another F-body enthusiast about a year ago. The kit comes with nearly everything you need to swap to fuel injection or to just upgrade from TPI. Brand new a similar kit is $2500 plus tax/shipping. I'm asking $950 obo for everything listed here. I'd like to sell everything at once, unless you make it worth my time to split items up. E-mail for more info/pics.
Kit's Contents:
Stealth Ram upper/lower intake, fuel rail kit with afpr
Factory style TPI throttle body
K&N cone air filter to fit directly to the throttle body
Ford/Bosch blue top injectors - 24lbs(@ 39psi)
Small Cap distributor
Bosch Oxygen Sensor
MSD Blaster Coil
All sensors and fittings
A full Accel wiring harness with stand alone ECM
Dedicated laptop with tuning software, a serial cable to connect directly to the Accel ECM, and the laptop is setup to get power from a 12v lighter socket. The laptop does look old and crusty, but still powers up and functions fully.
i have a few questions.
is this accel setup sequential or batch fire?
does this accel comp work well with the holley?
will the stock 52mm throttle body be a hindrance?
will porting the stealth ram base be overkill given the limited nature of the L98 heads? ( i have porting experience, i can do a pro style job on the man. base)
my son has lots of experience tuning fuel and spark maps, so we won't have probs tuning the setup, i just want to make sure this is a good starting point, or should i wait for a more complete stealth ram setup with the correct components?
for your further info, the truck has 3.73 limited slip rear, a 700 r4 with a stock type converter ( will change if needed), and an aftermarket add on wiring harness to accomodate the TPI it currently has.
thanks so much for your knowledge, paul, i have learned a lot from you over the last 3 years.
