Steering column swap

I need tilt steering in my 68 Catalina and trying to keep cost low as possible. Are columns a BOP part? What donor cars can I look at for this swap? I know there are some that are for cars with a floor shifter and 69 or 70 and later cars have the key on the column but is there any difference on columns older than 1968? Any potential problems to avoid?

I looked at some listed on eBay and sellers describe some as "loose" or needing rebuilding. Is this something that can be done on a bench top without special tools, what typically is done to rebuild and is it worth fooling with a loose column?

Id assume that similar 1968 pontiacs , the chevy impalla and buick of similar size and the same year (1968) should interchange as far as physically being interchangeable, but the salvage yards have an interchange manual that should be helpful
loose generally refers to well worn or abused but thats not 100% relieable

You need a Hollander Junkyard Parts exchange manual Richard.
I don't own that.
A close friend that runs an antique auto salvage yard has Hollander exchange manuals.

You can't use a Steering Column from a 1963 Pontiac .
Way different from your 1968 Catalina.

Brian, there is one one eBay that is a 65-66 for a current price of $250. Will that fit? Last year I could have had one on eBay for $180 , but I got distracted and missed it and kicking myself. My contact friend that has a junkyard sold his Hollander manuals when he switched over to material salvage. I wish they were online.

glad too help and if you need any info ask I'll try to research it for you

I can't say for sure Richard.
1965-1966 may be close or exact or all together different from your 1968 Catalina.
If Grumpy dont have the info then the best thing to do is get on Max Pontiac and ask.

The Rag Joint steering shaft is one piece on my '63 Grand Prix.
Its about 4-feet long.
Remove the steering wheel and slide the Column out. Shaft stays .

I'm getting some information.
1967 is the first year for collapsible steering columns so nothing is a good swap before then.
BOP "B" bodies are very close to each other and will swap around.
1970 and newer begins swap issues.
So, I need a 67, 68 or 1969 "B" body BOP tilt column and just repainted and rebuild it to liking. Hopefully one can be found for sub $200 without the wheel.

I will keep an eye out Richard.
My friend has that Antique auto salvage yard just a few miles from my house.
He may have the Tilt Steering column you want.
Try and stop by there this week.
Weather is supposed to be perfect so I will drive my '63 GP & Corvette a lot.

The Tilt Steering Colums for my Early Grand Prix sell for $600 on ebay.
They are Rare Now.

Is your Catalina a Column shift or floor shift Turbo 400 Richard ?
I don't recall.

It's a column shift TH400. I wish I had the console, It makes the inside seem like a smaller, sportier car. I've been searching for a cheap donor car but People want $3,000 to $4,000 for unusable crap. eBay has one for $1000 but it's in Washington State.
I would like to find the trim for the rear wheel skirts, the column, a battery tray, a windshield washer tank and a good rear bumper (I don't have the guy or the time to rehab the old one) and that pretty much finishes this car.
I need to investigate what's wrong with the A/C, the car came without A/C belt but I doubt I'll be lucky and that's all it needed.
I'll bring it out of winter storage this week and take some good pictures to post.

The Cat may just need an A/C Belt.

I need to get out in person and Network again.
Corvette has the Stignma yet....stuck up a-hole.
Driving the '63 GP People want to talk & Gossip.

Keep an eye out is what I do and let you know what I run across.
Pictures again of your 1968 Catalina Convertible will help.

Brian, That would be great if you could find a column, I could even give my good column as a partial trade in.

The pictures I posted originally were those the seller posted and they hid the bad parts.

I am not sure if my friend will be interested in trades Richard .
He was in the scrap metal business .
I hear he is hurting for $.
China is not buying our scrap metal.
I do think are in A Recession .
Bubble burst there.

Get pictures up so I can review and Memorize.

I was just offering something in addition to whatever it costs.

It's been in the news around the country that it's costing more fore the municipalities to collect the recyclables and process so they have been dumping the stuff if they don't have the space to save it for a future time.
