I just got off the phone with JACK!
there's a few interesting bits of info to be gleaned from his recent trip to get a project car from out of state!
he got a call from a cousin of his that knows jack likes to "TINKER WITH OLD CARS"
as he put it,
and he had called jack to inform him a neighbor in Georgia had a 1969 pontiac tempest that was in semi decent shape (NOT RUNNING) .
That he had acquired for $100 and was saving for JACK,
now, THE RESULT WAS JACK BORROWED A CAR TRAILER THAT HE FAILED TO CAREFULLY INSPECT.
the result was that that car trailer had been sitting in a guys drive way un-maintained for 5 plus years, and it was not a personally owned or well maintained trailer , but all Jack saw was it was handy and free, to use with the stipulation that Jack would replace any defective tires ,and yes Jack took a chance, and after a few hundred miles he had two separate flat tires on the way up to Georgia,
once he loaded the car, on the trailer, he found a bearing burned up within a few hundred miles with the load on the trailer.
In all, he found he spent two full extra days and almost $400 in tires and repairs on the trip to retrieve the car. add too that the day wasted swapping the title for legal ownership so there,s really little or no question that he owned the car during transport,
(you don,t need discussions of that type with out of state highway patrolmen) so have the paper work correct on any out of state car you buy, and the trip was a road map of problems best avoided with planing and prior maintenance, in this case he would have been better off renting a trailer commercially that was in better condition than the older and less well maintained trailer he borrowed.
and it could have been far worse, especially if the tire or bearing failures had resulted in loss of control of the trailer, tow vehicle (his pick-up) or the car on the trailer coming loose
youll need brakes
