today I tackled the brother-in laws 1974 corvette which had an intermittent tail light flickering issue.
I found the sockets the bulbs were in were in less than ideal condition (remember the cars 39 years old now)
napa had the lamp sockets available for about $11-$15 each, two back-up lamp sockets have $11 sockets and take the #56 bulbs
we replaced the sockets and soldered the connections using a bunch of tin solder and heat shrink tubing to do the job correctly, the end result was bright lights and problem solved, for only an hour or so work, much better than simply using wire nuts or crimp connectors

we also found that the back-up lights failed to work but that was traced to a missing linkage wire between the electrical switch and the muncies reverse shifter lever linkage, that was replaced with a carefully fabricated section of stainless steel T.I.G. welding wire bent and cut to fit and function
