its most likely a SWIVEL T-STAT housing , thats available in at least a dozen design configs that allow you to index the radiator hose exit point as YOU desire

btw do you have other pictures of that corvette with the engine installed from several other perspectives ?
do you know where that corvette is located currently?
the first time I saw it ,it was at the corvette museum in bowling green, but the second time I went there , to take detailed pictures of the engine install it was gone!

thoughts on cooling
sometimes things "stick" to the threads and just rip out and totally wreck the threads. Even when you use an Anti-Seize ? How about using an anti-seize and thread cleaner tap, run that thru there a several times before installing the anode. Here is a quick option...

Searched a bunch on the net today and came up with a neck from a 91-93 caprice. Going to the wreckers tomorrow to see what I can find. This neck has a little kink as it comes out which I am hoping will do the trick. Trying to do an efi plenum under a stock hood has me fighting for every bit of room I can get. Hopefully I will be able to post the other pic I have of the ZR2 engine.
