theres several more, shows, I rarely watch, the shows unless I,m bored, because I don,t think they reflect reality and in many cases the guys that do the work look more like actors, or scam artists, than guys with a lick of mechanical skill and playing childish pranks and having a lack of mechanical skill and in-fighting tends to make me want to turn off the tv.
Im frankly amazed that they get away with charging the prices they do for what in most cases,or that theres people willing to pay those prices!
they make the rebuilds that may take months, in reality, look like they took at most a few days or at most a weeks work, and rarely discuss the costs, problem getting or fitting parts or having to custom fabricate parts that are not available.
they rarely show tips on how to weld, wire, or form brake lines or do paint or body work in detail,
I think, in many cases is not near top quality work, being done.
or in some cases I think guys are paying for fancy paint , and a new interior on basic crap, in my opinion thats not worth 1/3rd of what they supposedly sell it for on the show.
whats your opinion?
WHAT SHOWS DO YOU SEE AS HELPFUL

I only have the Internet Grumpy at the house.
Most of the time I post from my phone .
All answers from my memory & experiences turning wrenches.
Drag racing. Street Racing. Helping others.
No TV sponsors here.
Our own Group here is more Talented combined.

Richard watches all those TV shows.
See what he thinks.

ive seen them in passing, sitting own eating dinner i watch velocity or speed or discovery or whatevers playing a car related show... but there isnt a show on tv about cars that is made for technical people like us grumpy, its all fiction and we deal in the real. those shows are made for and marketed to guys who sit infront of the tv fantasizing about the shit theyll never have because their wife has their nuts clipped off in her purse... so the guy, in his own fom of self loathing, sits in a state of mental masturbation salivating over the shiny paint and the chrome and the wacky fun things the "hot rodders" on tv do that he'll never get to experience.

the percentage of people that would genuinely like to watch real techs do real technical stuff is pretty small, and the guys that dont have a strong foundation of the basics wont get it, and wont enjoy it, and wont watch it, so it'll be gone before you know it. thats why for technical stuff we are forced to read from people like lingenfelter and yunick and vizard and the various other authors who get published with real substance. sad but true

Your without a Doubt a Mechanic & Street Racer Phil
Self made Man.
Just a few years younger than me.
You will spank them silly with your LSX Stroker in the 280Z.

we do what we can brian, its a shame because i was so hopeful for that street outlaws show, and it was a bunch of staged crap made for tv... there was an episode where they went to LA to race all the cali legends of street racing and the show has the OKC kids all winning all the races, but in actuality they lost over 75% of them, and had to reshoot for the show.

from the third or fourth episode i knew it was BS because i cant get two or three cars together for a hangout or a conversation without the cops messing everything up and these guys have no less than 10 single digit race cars in trailers showing up, doing burnouts, racing, driving back, negotiating, and shit talking and the cops never ever break it up? thats ridiculous.

and i got some free time soon so i should start gathering parts for the lsx swap. my ebay watch list is packed to the gills already

Ebay is Good.
My Watch List is always at 200. The Max.
Add to your shopping cart on Ebay.
Seems unlimited there.
I keep track of current prices that way.
Public & Collectors speak in past & present purchases.
Ebay only way to find parts for my old Pontiacs many times.

Have a goodie coming for the TA.
Wasn't too expensive.
Got orginal.
Not China repop shit.

I watched a few episodes of Street Outlaws, mainly wanted to see if I could recognize where they were filming since I was raised in OKC. Never could put a finger on their location. Never watched another episode after that.

How about the show "Chop, Cut, Rebuild", it didn't have all the drama like most of these shows.

I like the show called Gearz with Stacey David, he seemed to be a real hot rod person. But it's been a long time since I've seen him on TV. It's been years since I've gotten the Speed Channel.

I don,t catch the shows very often, and when I do, its usually, the shows, FAST AND LOUD,or COUNTING CARS, where they usually take some car they find in various states of dis-repair and generally do whats required to flip it, for what they hope is a big pay day for, and with, the work quality that varies wildly.
Its usually frustrating to watch,
and I find my self talking to the tv asking
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?
WHO IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULD PAY THAT MUCH?
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO THAT CAR?
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
the work being done, on the shows is done by a mix of serious mechanics and a few guys who think grinning at the camera is a skill set they get paid for! WORK VARIES from minor repairs to a total restoration or on the show,AMERICAN HOT ROD, where they generally semi to spend a great deal of time getting the cars rebuilt correctly, but having personality issues, and the works being done by a mix of skilled professionals who don,t seem to be that amused that they are forced to deal with and over see a staff of semi-drooling morons, that I would have fired 5 minutes into the show. honestly some of those guys must be related to the shows owner , or have a HUGE stack of incriminating photos he really does not want seen, that could get him life in prison, because they look and act nearly clueless, and can,t do much correctly.

About the only one I watch anymore is Grave Yard Cars. http://www.graveyardcarz.com/

It's 100% old school Mopar focused and they go into detail about the history of the cars and how they were made. Plus the in shop antics are funny.

I agree, Graveyard Cars is really informative , but like all the other shows they fill the bulk of their time with BS antics. "What's my car worth" is real but all dream cars. "Wheeler/Dealers" would be good if they get rid of the stereotypical UK Oxyclean salesman. I guess not paying the mechanic is akin to a DIY buying a car and doing the work yourself.
Back when PBS had programs like "Shade Tree Mechanics" you could learn trouble shooting' and potential problem areas without shows produced and written for vendors making the show a collection of commercials."

When I was still living in Peoria 2 years ago I was watching Orange County Choppers, Pinks, some goofy cross country road race, Speed Channel.
Watched alot of Cop shows too.
Orange County was kinda neat.
No one ever built thier engines from scratch, transmissions, Rear differentials.
Drag Raced & Ran 8's or Faster.
Or Entered Jegs Engine Master & Won $200 K.

Never seen a 4-Link built & installed in a C4 or C5 Gen Corvette.
Never seen a Pro Stock Race Chassis built from scratch.
Never seen a Home built car run over 200 mph on the dry lakes od California , The Texas Mile, & Bonnneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Even then 2 years ago on TV.....JACKING OFF....

Brian, what you see on TV - It's all about sponsorship. There has been a few 4 link C4 & 5 on TV, just Google or Youtube for them. Business Weekly wrote an article about Orange CC. Those guys made tens of millions, even the mechanics made a few million, have agents and the lessor members of the team do endorsements in 16 other countries. The old man tried to exclude 17 million dollars in free tools and machinery given by sponsors in his bankruptcy. I never liked the old man (he was asking me some questions at a Mecum event 5 years ago - not too bright is putting it lightly) he's an example of being in the right place at the right time, And his bikes. . . . . My friend has one of their typical choppers and I just don't get it. I'd like to give a polygraph to anybody that says these bikes are anything but "Hey, Look at me!" The worst ride bike ride of my life was on this bike. Hurts your back, Rough roads and potholes are virtual killers, exhaust never engineered against drone - not a distance runner by any means! At speed crash avoidance is a matter for fate or luck to stay upright. Do I need to say anything about ape-hangers?
It's like women who wear those super high heel shoes with a 1/2" sq. heel. They are so painful and yet they couldn't live without them.

Lol.
Rich....I never knew all that Happenef on OCC.
The Old Man was a mean Dick most of the time.
Kids goofed off.
But they built a few neat looking bikes.
All show I am sure.
The Gillette Razor Harley is likely my Favorite.
Had to been 10-11 Feet Long.
A unique Masterpiece I thought.

I like Hopping on a Big Twin Harley every now & then Rich.
Yes most don't ride very well. Handling so so.
But if yoyr aggressive they will Manuver.
Like a Nose Heavy Musclecar.
Get up to a Buck 100-110 for 10- seconds feels good.
Torque Power band Harley is Fun.

Those OCC and a Factory Harley bikes are worlds apart. I had a beautiful Road King until last year when I couldn't ride it I sold it to a friend. Before that it was a customized Fatboy. I still have a 1973 Triumph Bonneville totally restored but too small for my liking. I plan on next year being able to ride again and I'll return to renting. It doesn't make sense to buy when renting gets me a new bike ready to ride and the HD dealer is around the corner.
