Provided the threads on the oil filter and oil seal ring are identical in most cases you can use the longer oil filters available, I usually suggest using the longest oil filter that fits the application , your driving ,simply because the longer oil filter has significantly more filter surface medium area, so its less restrictive to oil flow and slower to clog up, its length mostly has to do with road clearance and oil pan depth, trucks tend to have longer filters and deeper oil pans because they have greater road clearance.
yes theres a big difference in the better oil filter brands in some cases.
General wear on a new engine is going to produce some metallic particles as the rings wear into or lap into the cylinder walls. That's part of the reason why oil changes at 300-1000 miles used to be recommended on new cars, as the first oil filter change interval, is very important to remove this common debris,from the oil flow, as the micro burrs, and micro peaks on parts wore in,that would wear off and end up in the oil. Nowadays with some of the better/superior oils that put the older oils on a lower level of protection, the odds of finding anything significant in the filter medium after the first oil change, is pretty small unless you have a major clearance or geometry problem.but be aware newer oils tend to have a different wear additive package designed for roller lifters, you need the older oil designs for the flat tappet lifters with the higher ZINC & PHOSPHORUS & calcium wear additives

I wasn't sure if some engines needed a filter with a bypass or a relief valve. This would
be something difficult to determine from a visual inspection. All I've done is look thru the boxes
until I found a filter with similar dimensions.
Ground clearance never seem to be a problem with the cars I've done this with, the manufacture
seems to be very conservative when specifying their filters.
