TPI to carb swap.

Hi guys, im switching my problematic TPI system over to carb. (Dont ask- long story)

Anyways, Ive found alot of great info here and on the 3rd gen site and Im ready to get going on the swap. Ive got the old school HEI, 600 holley 1850, and a couple intakes. I just have to order the return regulator.

I still have a couple questions. On a C4 can I run a high rise like a performer rpm ?
What about just a performer or stealth manifold. The height is what worrys me.

Also, anyone that has done the swap. Were you happy ? Ive heard that the cars actually can run stronger and higher in the rpm range when switched over. Can I get 6 grand out of it now ?

My car has ported stock heads, bigger valves, springs, full 1.6 roller rockers and the tpi didnt pull much after 5 grand.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Jeff. Cars an 87 C4.

from the front engine block rail. to the underside of the hood, the clearance available on the c4 corvette is approximately 9" (it varies a tiny bit between years and cars,)so you will need to measure the carb, manifold and air cleaner height combined to see if your particular combo clears

Thanks, alot of people have done this. Seems like performer rpm height is about the limit with the stock hood. I might try a stealth dual plane high rise. I'll keep ya posted !

I think your on the right track. The TPI is a great 4X4 engine not so good in a Vett. I agree with Grump, you have 9" above the intake rails to work with for the manifold, carb and air cleaner. I am planing a carb swap on a 84 crossfire. (even worse than the TPI) The intake manufactures have dimensions on their web sites. I think about 1 1/2" between the air cleaner lid and air horn will work if you dont have a choke housing. To get good performance in the 5000-6000 range your gonna need a cam. Manual or auto? Keep in touch! picks are great! I plan on using a Holley 650 HP

Im gonna get going on this soon. Im just collecting the parts needed on a budget.

I will take pics, I might even try a Qjet for that great mileage and sound when those big secondaries kick in ! I have about 4 of them here somewhere.

Looking foreward to seeing this project unfold. Useing a carb with out a choke housing will save a full inch or so because the air cleaner cover can sit a lot closer to the carb. I dont know if they still make it but K&N use to make a "stub stack" to improve flow on Holleys with milled off chokes. Then on the other hand, a little quality time on the hood with a sawsall will open up a lot of options.

Sorry guys, Im not going to complete this swap...
Ive sold the c4 and bought a real nice 1st gen camaro project..
Prostreet, but a lot of work to be done.

Someday, when my situations a little better, I will get another vette.

Maybe there's a place I can show it off.
