"GRUMPY?
I have a 1978 vett with a muncie m20 and a 350. I am in the middle of a frame off and we have been trying to install the new clutch and mount the trans.Everything is new or has been rebuilt.Flywheel, pilot bushing, clutch, clutch plate, and throwout bearing are all new and engine and trans rebuilt. After assembling clutch, clutch plate and bell housing I can get the transmission within a half inch of the bell housing and then it just stops. We are using a clutch alignment tool and have verified measurements I have taken this thing apart and reassembled it numerous times with the same results. I also have a corvette restoration guy who comes to my house once a week to work on my car who can't figure it out either. The only other thing to mention at this point is that the bell housing is a two piece lakewood and the clutch and clutch plate are a center force series 1. Anyone ever had this issue before????"
OK I,m assuming your using the same transmission and bell housing you previously used, is that correct?
If you changed it, The pilot bearing, may not fit the front spline shaft bearing support, diam.on the trans splined shaft ,keeping it from fully seating, but Id also verify the clutch disk is facing the correct direction, one side of the disc usually has got raised springs that seats facing the pressure plate, , the disk slides over the splines and the throw-out bearing slides easily on the trans collar , and your using the correct throw out bearing type. If I was you Id suggest placing the old clutch parts next to the new parts ,pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing, clutch fork, etc and carefully compare the parts for dimensional differences.
If your bell housing and clutch linkage are in place, you might try depressing the clutch petal to free up the clutch disk, so the trans will more easily self align with the pilot bearing if its a couple thousands off, but ID tend to think the bell housing alignments off if thats required
When you go to install the muncie transmission, you'll obviously want the clutch disc lined up correctly with the clutch alignment tool, and the pressure plate bolted on the flywheel, then remove the alignment tool after the bell housings ready to properly install, ID start with a clutch disc alignment tool being removed once the then Id get the bell housing lined up, ID install two 3" long studs,if you can,t find studs buy studs buy 3" bolts and cut the heads off and round off the tips to allow easy use
that have the same thread as the muncie trans retention bolts in the bottom two bell housing bolt holes, so you could get the majority of the weight off the trans front and get the spline close to lining up, use the two top bolts to clamp in to the bell housing before removing the studs and replacing them with bolts
