I got a call last night from a friends wife , she said Tom ,
who is a guy I built a couple engines for over the years, mentioned that the reason he was not more seriously hurt,
was Id repeatedly stressed the need to have a fire extinguisher handy ,AND
and a turned on, pressurized garden hose with a nozzle, that could be instantly turned too spray, anytime he was welding on the car......

well he managed to somehow set the car he was working on's interior on fire, while he was under the car , his 1968 road runner, with it up on jack stands, while he was working on the exhaust system,
something like this picture
vettejack1.jpg

and he had grabbed the hose and had it out, with only minor damage, mostly because most of the interior had yet to be re-installed
other than a few minor burns he incurred,
while trying to slap down the flames, with an old towel, before his brains kicked in and he grabbed the garden hose.
he had mentioned too his wife,
the fact that he had positioned the garden hose and turned it on,
because he had seen me do so every time I worked on my car,
(as a precaution)

damage was limited mostly too the floor insulation and some rug material,
and a few blistered fingers as molten plastic sticks and leaves painful burns on fingers.
(trying to slap out burning molten plastic with a dry towel,..seldom goes well) :D

keep in mind it only takes a few minutes for a shop fire to get out of control,
and having taken a few precautions for the unexpected ,
uncommon, but potentially catastrophic fire is only sense-able)

failing to do so is something you may regret for decades

(as its not nearly as difficult to clean up as a dry chemical extinguisher is)
but most of us have a garden hose with a spray nozzle so thats always a good idea

read linked thread as this is a far too common issue
