in most cases guys only think about valves when they have a part failure, but more experienced racers know you can buy bare cylinder heads and custom select your own valve train components.
IT makes no sense to buy factory assembled heads vs bare heads if your intended application requires extensive changes to the valve train components
most manufacturers do a decent job of selecting and assembling the valves and springs, retainers, etc. used in their assembled heads, but the choices are by necessity rather generic , but there are significant improvements in those components that can be made for some applications.
longer valves, beehive springs, titanium retainers, spring seat cups, shims etc. can be used to alter the valve train geometry or increase the clearances.
there are also lighter valves and higher quality springs available
