Hey Grunpy
I've got a question that I hope that you can help me with. I have a pair of '95 Impalas and they are both modified a bit. My question is about the hotter of the two. Currently I have a 242/248 with right at .600 lift with the 1.6 roller rockers. It's on a 113 degree to make it a bit more fuel injection friendly. I've only got about 5000 miles on it.
I'm wanting a cam that will still make good power without it loping (chop) whatever they call it these days, too much. I don't need it to sound like a AA/F dragster. I built it to be high horsepower and reliable.......as possible. It has a Lunati Dragonslayer crank, Lunati forged rods, Mahle forged flat top pistons that aregiving me compression in the mid 11'2.
I've got the AFR Eliminator heads (62cc) that are supposed to flow around 308 on the intake and 240 exhaust. 2.08/1.6 valves and Tony Mamo did some additional hand work on these. Jesel shaft mount rockers, big ole' pushrods and it's non-self aligning.
1 7/8" headers eight coils and it's a LT4 engine with the 383 stroker stuff in it. I've been told by some drag racing guys that it is "probably" making 525-550 HP. They based that on the 11.68 at 118 that I ran on the Hot Rod Power Tour. No, I'm not a drag racer. Just a 71 year old youngster that enjoys a good time.
The Impala is a t-56 that has been Magnumized and should hold whatever power there is. I've got a 4" Denny's driveshaft with an Eaton posi and 4.56 gears that work great on the street. 70MPH is around 2100 RPM in 6th.
I have 42# injectors and a 58mm throttle body with a straight in intke (RAISS). The intake has been ported to match the heads and the interior runners radiused to help with airflow.
I'd like a cam the can still get me around 500 HP but I'd like it to sound like the old W-30 engine. A nice lope but nothing too radical. I talked to a cam guy and he's wanting around 650 lift and I just don't want to work the springs and valvetrain that hard because I take road trips.......sometimes long ones. Have you got any ideas or is the situation hopeless?
I know there's a lot of info here and I'm sure I forgot something so let me know what you need. There's no big rush as long as it's before the snow flies here in Kentucky. Thanks.
as too the cam, Id try a this one if it was my car simply because I,ve used it in similar builds with good results, but Id certainly call 5-7 different brand name ,cam manufacturers , tech departments asking for their input
installed 4 degrees retarded (split overlap)with those 1.6:1 roller rockers, and run it through your software dyno, youve got better heads than I have but the rest is similar, Id expect a more impressive mid range torque curve and no problem exceeding 500 hp
