I have this 383 stroker and im not sure what kind of tranny to back it up with. the engine makes 420 hp and 440 ft lbs. i want a reliable tranny for street and on occasion the strip. this is going to be my winter project. I need something that will hold up. any ideas? please help

well the first question is are you looking for an automatic trans,is what level of torque you intend to transfer thru that transmission and how many gear changes and the gear ratios youll be dealing with, and theres also the potential to select a transmission with an OVERDRIVE RATIO, in some cases.
and automatic transmission,(with or without an over drive ratio) will need to stand up to both heat and shock levels that will more than likely far exceed what the original OEM transmission designers never envisioned, if your building a performance car, and most stock transmissions were designed to handle LESS than 450 ft lbs of torque ,many G.M. transmissions are factory rated at 350 ft lbs , and even the heavy duty th400 and 4L80E are only factory rated at 440 FT LBS , so look into upgraded aftermarket components if your going to exceed that 450 ft lbs.
with the proper aftermarket parts used in a rebuilt transmission 800 ft lbs is a level the 4L80E and TH400 can sustain
or a manual trans and what car/truck will it be installed in and the cars weight and tire diameter, and rear gear ratio.?
second question....whats your budget?
Id also want to know at what rpm the engine seems to start making good power, because if your making 420 hp you most likely have an aftermarket cam that won,t pull well without a higher than stock stall converter if you select an automatic transmission
