Yes The Oil Used And Oil Level Does Mater!

I spent several hours yesterday evening helping a local guy break in a cam/engine combo
set timing, basically break in rings etc. on his new 479 BBC engine.
he has a 7 quart after market baffled oil pan on the car ,
with about 5.5-6 quarts of 10w30 valvoline synthetic oil
my neighbor added, only that much oil, as he heard running a quart low helped horse power..
once we started I kept a constant eye on the engine the temp and oil temp,
and oil pressure gauge,s .

hes using a longer length WIX oil filter and the car has an oil cooler,
with a remote mount on the inner fender that makes changing it easy,
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/prm-1795/overview/
as the longer oil filter interfered with easy header use.
rated at 17000 lbs towing, according to him,
(I could not find that info on the package)
as we broke in the rings and made minor adjustments to the ignition timing and carb settings,
adjusted valves, oil temp climbed steadily at the intermittent 2500 rpm idle
(we were stopping the engine every few minutes to make changes)
as I was using an infrared temp gun and other meters and gauges to monitor the engine,
we had used about 15 minutes to lap in the bearings, rings and valve train,
until oil temps steadied out near 220f, after we stopped the lap in process,
I looked at the dipstick,
saw it was about 1.2 quarts low and suggested we add that missing quart
being a solid roller cam, we really did not need the cam and lifters to lap in.
once we added just that extra quart the temp dropped to 200 f for a few minutes,
and after about 12-15 minutes it had not exceeded that 210f temp
thats a solid 10F difference once the engine temps stabilized,
due to about 1 quart of oil difference in volume in the oil pan,
I ask him why the oil was running a bit hotter than I thought it should be,
as we had a very large box fan blowing air over the radiator,
he looked at me like a deer in the head lights and said...OH CRAP....
and turned off the engine, the car was up on 4 12 ton jack stands ,
which is always a good idea , when breaking in a new engine,
as it makes locating oil and fluid leaks and adjustments far easier,
he got under the car and did something and then asked me to restart the car,
before I did, I asked him what he did?, his answer was connect the oil cooler,
I rechecked the dip stick, we were now 2 quarts low,
I added the extra oil, as required,
oil temps were now only about 187 f and stayed there????,
I asked him what he had changed,
he said he had the oil cooler line disconnected previously and had it routed previously too bye-passing the cooler,
he had simply re-routed the oil lines back through the cooler. the new lines and oil cooler held about 1.5 quarts,

BTW
for those that are not aware the formula for displacement is
bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinder x .7854
his engine has a 4.5" bore and a 3.76" stroke forged crank from a 427
he used 6.535" connecting rods and 12.5:1 compression pistons
aluminum water pump,
he used a crane solid roller cam

Edelbrock Super Victor Intake Manifolds 2895
a 1050 cfm dominator carb
hooker long tube headers, and at this point open exhaust
all matched to a muncie 4 speed, 22 lb aluminum flywheel,
and a 4.11:1 rear gear differential in a 1969 camaro,
he has not driven the car yet as the drive shaft is still in the machine shop, but it certainly sounds impressive
