one of the guys I know from the south end of Orlando Florida area (JACK) agreed to drive down here with a local friend that just purchased a 1955 Chevy truck thats been modified with a BIG BLOCK engine swap and a new th400 transmission. he bought it from a neighbor who had it taking up room in his garage for 20 plus year, who finely decided he was never going to get it working correctly and that he was getting to old to care! he wanted me to look it over and tune it up, and well his complaint is that the darn truck gets terrible mileage and just won,t run decent and can,t get to over about 50 mph.

let me give you a hint as to the cause, it took about 5 minutes to locate the major cause, and before you go thinking , things like that just can,t happen....I remember when I was 16- 20 years old, doing several similar dumb things simply because I didn,t as yet understand a great deal about cars

second HINT, theres guys that have NEVER SEEN A MANUAL CHOKE!,
and never realized that that pull handle up under the dash effectively and significantly reduces air flow entering the carb.
now to be fair he bought the car and drove it here the same day, and hes had never driven a 1950s type car or any older muscle car before, and yes in 20 years he will be laughing at this.

amazingly once the manual chokes released the plugs cleaned up on there own within 15 minutes and the car runs decently , and the engine numbers show its a low compression 454 from a 1980s truck, so what he paid for the truck which was only $3700 was not all that bad a deal, even thought the truck needs some paint and interior work, its basically a great project in decent shape.
