a few days ago, one of the guys I hunt with occasionally called to say he was having a cylinder miss, in his new 4x4 ford truck,
and wanted my advice on finding the cause,, I suggested several places to look and things to check,
he calls back and says he has access to a bore scope that fits his cell phone,
and once pulled the spark plug on that cylinder ,he found the problem,
he stated he has a huge crack in the piston,
so he's pulling the head to verify, why not drop by?
I get there about three hours later after running several "HONEY DO ME A FAVOR TRIPS"
and HEs just pulling the head.... now hes pissed!
the cylinder looks great!
it looks new/ flawless....
After a little bit of questioning and he shows me the new bore scope and cell phone,
and its hard to see in daylight, but once you stick the probe into a cylinder ,
ANY CYLINDER, the problems source is all too obvious!
the major CRACK is in the bore scope LENS,
that makes every piston you look at appear to be DAMAGED...
it was the very first time he used that bore scope, and it never occurred to him,
that what he was looking at was a picture through a cracked lens ,
remember that lens is maybe 5mm, or 22 caliber, in diameter
so he had disassembled the engines upper end basically for nothing!
yeah, we ALL make mistakes,
its part of paying your dues, gaining experience
luckily his was not all that time intensive or expensive... he may even laugh about it in 20 years time,
on the plus side I think he invented a few new cuss words %^^&^^%^&%%$#

Do you know how they measure the actual air gap when there is only a small access hole like you would use with an optic probe? Maybe eyeball estimate is good enough? Put the floor, etc. back together... Now to look at the clutch pedal and linkage.... The chalk mark by that lower bolt is 2.7"...
