My Introduction

Orange, California
Today I joined Grumpy's Performance web page. I have been racing all my life. I started in motocross and karting. When a new kart track was built nearby, I went all in. Road racing. I raced shifter karts exclusively.
I built my own engines. My studies centered around Applied Physics. The knowledge I gained as I grew to understand how the dynamics of flow worked, the faster my engines became. On the side I built kart and GP road race engine and exhaust pipes. I took one customers bikes and set it up for a standing mile run. Bythe end of the year we had broken 13 land speed records in 4 different classes. We also were the first to devolop a working weather station and a system of notes to record all our data. This was a HUGE advantage!
Now, after losing my left leg, I still raced my shifter and tied for the National title in points in 96 with controls moved around. However, I went back to school for their grad program, and stopped racing.
A few years later I decided to switch to drag racing, being 56 my skills aren't what they used to be for road racing. And, having a 1967 El Camino sitting in my garage, I figured...why not? So here I am. I live in Orange, Ca. and ready to drive the car with the new motor I've built. Backhalf 20181128_130449.jpg engine 2 20181128_133925.jpg Full car 2 Ms Maya 20181128_135023.jpg

Welcome to the forums what type of drag racing or class you planning on running in
At first, I think ProStreet. When I do swap out the engine, I know there are a few classes I can run. But, to be honest I am unsure at the moment.
The car is "big tire" and has a fiberglass front-end so Pro-ET is a good fit. I am friends with Gerald Halle who won the NHRA Championship in Pro ET
a few years back. Our cars are basically the same, except for the size of our engines. So, I will be aiming for Pro-ET when I do the swap.
You can probably tell, I am a bit unsure.

Welcome Steve. I hope you have a lot of good advice to give here.

Pro ET class at most tracks is 13:50 et to 9.0 it draws the most cars and is the most competitive class to run in do to the car count.

welcome to the web site
Thanks! Hey, I thought this was Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins blog/web-site. That's why I was asking tech questions. I just learned
Grumpy died 5 years ago! However, you seemed to have a nice following, and a shop, so I figure you have a good handle on
tech. I just wanted to put that out there. If you have 10% the knowledge Bill did, then your advice will be valuable.
Steve
BTW I emailed the admin wondering why I can't upload my usual Avatar.

That about where I want to be. I eventually want a competitive 8-second car. In the meantime, I'll be running a 3200lb car with a N/A 496. With 800-850hp I figured mid+ 9s would be great.
I am lightening the car as much as I can afford. I have purchased a fiberglass front end, so I hope to get my car close to 3200lb as I can.

You can run the super class fastest you can dial is 7.50. This class mostly consists of rear engine dragsters. Your have to buy all the electronics to be competitive it’s hard to outrun a computer in a trans brake only car.

That kind of speed, in a door-car is more than I can afford right now. Once I figure out how to how to tune my chassis in all different track conditions I will build a new motor. Until then, its a stock block 496.
I still need to add a tunnel ram and vacuum pump to my set up...and methanol injection. I am just getting over major surgery and not currently back at work.

In bracket racing going fast doesn’t mean your win the race showing up and being able to drive will win more races then not

Its really hard to Win Bracket Racing down to .001 seconds dial in time with a Muncie 4-speed.
Turbo 400 & Turbo 350 Rules there.
Powerglide 2- speed in fast lightweight high powered cars over 800 Hp just 1 shift to make.

Norm E runner uped in street at South Mountain with a 327 glide car 1/8 mile track 8.40 car Low 13 in the 1320 he lost to Fox in his Nissan Sentra that on a good day runs elevens in the 1/8 its not how bad ass your car is you don’t need 800hp to run a glide I started with a 6 cylinder glide nova I run a two speed 700R4 in my car now. TV is making the sport I love very difficult everyone thinks they have to show up with a 8 second ride bracket racing is not street racing you don’t need the shit you see on tv to be competitive or have fun sorry for going off and being winded the car count is going down because of the outlaw shows when people see what it’s going to cost to build a car of that caliber they give up without knowing we exist

I don't like where Street Outlaws is going.
Have every Ficken Moron out there racing on the streets.
Used to be Super Hero only stuff.
Always been dangerous too.

Been a while since I talked to a True Bracket Drag Racer.
I have other cars .
A 1987 Chevy Corvette.
A 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Both Auto cars.

A Turbo 400 with accumalotors blocked off would make for consistent times.
In my 63 Gp a Turbo 400.
Have another Th400 that Got put on the back burner I need to finish.
