Here's a dim picture of the Wagon "el Gigante" as we have been calling her. 289 3spd car... I'm grown partial to the column shift. If it gets a motor transplant most likely will get a T5 as well at that time... we will see what parts we accumulate for it. Not in a hurry... current motor runs well enough to be fun driving the girls around in or to take for a short evening fishing trip. Have two sets of trim for it boxed on a shelf... as well as the original roof rack. The one on it now is off of a Chevy but looked better and felt a bit more solid. Have a set of Detroit Eaton springs to put on it, dual pipes with bellflowers http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pte-h1532/overview/, put fresh carpet and headliner, fix heater tune up, maybe new cam... cruise it.

Again... not the car the big block will go in but it's a fun car that gets thumbs ups everywhere I drive it. People just dig it.

Some light surface on the hood (can be seen in the pic) and a smaller patch on the roof... nothing that has me concerned so far. floor pans and fenders are solid... it was one of those "grandma had it in a garage for 30 years" cars. Pretty straight, I shot down the body line to hopefully show that a bit. Drivers side is the same. I know the side mirrors have to be wrong... wings don't open all the way as the mirrors are in the way...

There is some cancer in the tail gate... leaves had accumulated in there and retained some moisture. I cleaned that all out real well and hit it with some rust inhibitor and clear on the inside of the gate assembly to hopefully stop it from spreading. It's on the skin of the gate on the bottom...

Sounds like you have a really excellent starting place when you get ready. Life will
be easy with almost no rust !

Trying to get a better understanding of the general strength of big block 2 bolt mains…
General plan: Need new pistons and rods… have stock steel crank… weighing options on rotating assembly versus buying separate… at this point to me the best bang for buck is a SCAT or Ohio assembly. Will be running the iron heads with mild mannered hydraulic roller… don’t plan on running it past 6-6500.
Would the general recommendation be to drop the coin on 4 bolt caps while the other machine work is being done? I know the BBC are inherently stronger then SBC and crank walk happens at somewhat higher power and RPM levels…

I found this: “STOCK OEM 4 bolt 454 blocks are not all that expensive
and a 2 bolt block with ARP main studs can support a surprising amount of hp, I don,t think its financially worth the effort to convert a 2 bolt block rather than swapping to ARP studs or a 4 bolt block, the conversion machine work and splayed main caps are likely to make selling a current block and purchasiing a factory 4 bolt block a better option”

So short answer… what is a reasonable threshold for abandoning a 2 bolt with studs for a 4 bolt?

To fit 4-bolt main caps onto a 2-bolt block does not come inexpensive.
Purchase price of 4-bolt main caps - $300-$900.
Cut the caps, ailgnment dowels installed and align bored-$300-$600.
Align hone-$100-300.
If you use ARP Studs $150-$200.

I once had a 455 Pontiac 2-bolt converted to 4-bolt.
Costed me $1500 in machine work.
Was it worth it....No.
2-bolt. Factory Pontiac 455 is good for 750-800 HP.
Proven fact.

Chevy BBC 2-bolt is reputed to be good for 500-600 HP With proper machine work and hardware used.L
Your using a mild street hyd roller cam.
Serious Drag Racing you don't have in mind as I understand.
2-bolt will work fine.

Once you choose ARP MAIN STUDS YOU MUST ALIGN HONE THE BLOCK.
STUDS DON'T SELF CENTER EXACT AS STOCK MAIN CAP BOLTS DID.
HOLDS TRUE FOR 2-BOLT & 4-BOLT.

Poncho has all main caps factory doweled.
All are factory align honed.
Only Pontiac did this factory stock.
