Father & Son Chevy Build Project

Odd question for the group… maybe someone has encountered this during one of thier past builds. I can hear something… not sure what… inside the block. While I was masking it for paint the other day is the first time I heard it… while turning it on the stand it can sometimes be heard shifting around. I’m pretty certain it is in a hidden portion of the water passages between cylinders on the back of the block… but I’m having trouble pinpointing exactly where. Using different probes and flashlights I have yet to feel or see it.
Thoughts? My best guess is that something got blasted into a water passage on the deck surface while it was at the machine shop. I certainly don’t want to leave some rogue bit of who knows what cruising around in the water passages potentially blocking a steam hole or working into the water pump or who knows where.

Thanks,
Troy

its most likely a old freeze plug it was rather common for guys in the past to just knock old ones into the blocks coolant passages then insert a new one, get a strong light and look from the head deck passages, use a long metal 5/16" rod to try to move any suspected debris, once located place the block on the engine stand so the loose plug can be pushed too a freeze plug hole and grasp with locking vise grip pliers and leveraged out

BTW HAVE YOU REMOVED THE MANUAL FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD?

That could be... I will take a brighter light source with me and take another look next time I make it out to the shop. I will let you know what I find or not.

Thanks,
Troy

Just saw the bit about fuel pump rod... this is later model casting and never had a mechanical fuel pump on it. Block came from a '97 or '98 truck.

Well Grumpy… you called it. I took a break from work and strolled thru the lite rain armed with LEDs and a hook probe fashioned from coat hanger wire. After some manipulation and several turns of the block I found the offender. Passenger side rear freeze plug is still in the block. I was looking for something smaller initially... a bolt or washer or nut... not something of this shape and texture.

From what I can tell I won’t be able to access it thru the closest side plug… so it looks like I will have to remove the block from the work stand and pull the rear plug to extract. Annoying for sure. At least I have another reason to pull the steel plugs the machine shop threw in and put some brass ones in instead.

That was a good read and should give me what I need to proceed.

Thanks Grumpy!

Nothing to speak of… summer has come and gone. He is settling into high school and as temps come down we should feel like hanging out in the shop more. His interest is currently the Jeep… since he found out that will be his driver in 18 months when 16 happens. I’m actually planning on spending most of next week doing projects that I want to do as I’m not going to be following drag week around all week as I had previously planned… leaving me with un-allocated days off from work!

BTW… thanks for the nudge back to this project by reminding me that it exists! ;)

Just checking up on you. Teenager's motivation can come and go in an instant,
so I understand what you are dealing with there.

Camaro has taken a back seat… that motor is sitting in different places still… in various states of cleaning, prep and planning. Have another project that has stepped in front of it in line… looking for reading material on SBF… 289 more specifically…

Found my back to the site… getting the itch to spend more time in the shop as spring finds its way into my veins. The 350 is most likely not going to wind up in the Camaro… think I have it sold/allocated to a family member’s future S-10 project. The time I have been able to spend has been on a 1966 Ranch Wagon I picked up for family fun… so the Camaro has been un-touched. I have picked up some future bits for it… including a 454 and several transmission candidates to choose from. Currently reading thru the “Cheaper 454 Chevy Build” links with this particular one peaking my interest:

You know we need photos !!! Our minds can't comprehend without pics.

You can never go wrong with putting a Chevy in a Ford, it does tend to improve the car! :D

Is Phil watching???

I will be honest… that was on my mind… the BBC in the Ranch Wagon… but I want that for nostalgia road trips and family cruises. AND I think my Ford guru friend would dis-own me if I did that. I am currently sourcing some small block parts for that project… maybe EFI 5.0 swap as he has most of that sitting on shelves.
Big block build will get stuffed into the third gen Camaro.

i see you mofo... and i accept your challenge with! the iron duke.... you can in fact go wrong putting that chevy motor in anything... even a chevy

nah, in fact i think if i build a purpose built race car in the future itll be a fox platform with big cube lsx turbo guts... best racing chassis gets best racing motor? i like this

Well... one of the guys here did very well with a procharched big block chevy in his fox this year... changing it a bit for next season though. Man that thing was loud... bull horns with some sort of Borla collector excuse for a muffler. It was great fun hearing it leave my block for 3 miles :) Nothing close to stock parts of course.

Oh man... did I inadvertently stir up trouble here?

No problems, Phil knows I like to give him a hard time about Fords when I
get the chance. It's all in fun!!! :p

if you really want to see some one get upset, about no brand loyalty , show up to a Pontiac club meeting with an outstanding looking 1967 Pontiac gto, with damn near perfect paint ,chrome ,etc....that's got a non-Pontiac drive train and disc brakes on all four wheels
that looked very similar to this one below, that I spent several months helping the owner build, except that it was the Pontiac 1968 Verdoro olive green, and...

we had done a few minor upgrades... a 500 cubic inch CADDY ENGINE, with a crane hydraulic cam added, some port work to the heads, TH400, with a full manual control floor shifter, 3000rpm stall converter and DANA 60 rear differential, with 3.55:1 ring & pinion gears, and a step up in tire size on all four corners
this cam and the higher compression heads we used made it sound far different than any caddy you might think of.
I tried very hard to get him to sell me that car once it was completed and I drove it as I felt it was an amazing car
