Hello from Canada

I have 2 pumps on hand, standard volume M77 with rectangular box style pick up , as well as a 10770 HV with round screen pick up, so needing to purchasing one is not part of my install decision at this point. My main clearances are .002 numbers 1 to 4, and .003 on number 5. Rods are .0015 to .002.

The only slight mods I have done are cleaning up of casting in valley drain slots, and drilling of two oil gallery plugs behind timing gear to spray some oil in the chain area. Other than that running a hyd roller cam with Morel 4603 lifters.

Have a Stefs 7 quart pan with windage tray and scraper, mind you I had to cut and modify a bit to clear my crossmember, so now down to a 6 quart pan.

Having 20 pounds at idle does not bother me, that is sufficient, I just need to weigh all the postings out to see if HV actually beneficial for roller lifters and small mod done or if unnecessary.

from the info youve posted I don,t see any advantage to use of the high volume oil pump in that specific application, if your clearances are as stated and your pulling 20 psi at hot idle with the standard oil pump, just be sure to install the pump pick up with 3/8"-1/2" clearance to the oil pan floor.Id also point out that if you did choose to install the high volume oil pump is would add a bit of extra load on the cam/distributor gear area and might cost you 1/2-1 hp, in increased resistance at peak rpms but it would not cause the oil pan to pump dry or cost you a great deal of horse power,or distributor gear wear.

Its smart to file a small groove in the lower distributor so oil spray from the oil passage constantly lubricates the distributor gear to cam gar contact point

Hi guys! Well was able to squeeze in enough time to get the engine back together, installed and running. Only had a day left by that time to do some tuning and go for a bit of a ride before work calls. I am very pleased with results, night and day difference with the compression increase, quench tightening and cam degreeing. Purrs like a kitten and can now rename the gas pedal to a tire expense, lol. With every quick solid hit of the pedal you lose a layer of tread :). Its beautifull and was able to give the wife stomach butterflies on one quick shot up the block.

Ran the standard volume pump, oil pressure 25-30 at hot idle, 55 at higher rpms. Water temps perfect. Had 5.5-6 inches at idle so changed power valve to 3.5 from 4.5 as it seemed to be rich and that helped. Will check main jetting when I get back at it in a few weeks, oil change etc. it did ping a little at 39-40 total, dropped down to 37 and sounds good. Also installed exhuast valve seals on brodix heads and cleared bit of smoke issue up.

How long do you suggest changing oil after break in, I was thinking quickly after a couple drives? Am running Royal Purple 10W30 break in oil.

Cheers

I usually drain the engines break-in oil for the first time after I break in a cam after about 3-6 hours of driving , because by that time the cam lube and any metallic trash is at least in theory trapped in the oil filter , I generally throw on a new oil filter and fill the cars engine with something like SHELL 10w30 , the $20-$30 in fresh oil being "WASTED" is dirt cheap insurance if it allows you to remove potentially destructive metallic debris, and run the engine that way for at least 300-1000 miles and change oil again, the idea is to drain and remove as much metallic dust that is generated during the rings and lifters lapping in process as possible, then from that time on, change oil and filter every 5000-7000 miles

Hi, finally posted a few pics up. When I purchased the car, sheet metal work had been completed and body painted. I just had to complete chrome, windows, interior refurb, driveline updates, etc etc, you know how it goes once you start. The original colours were black ext, gold interior. Since the previous owner prior to my possesion had replcaed the engine with a 1969 396 and a turbo 400 automatic, it was no longer numbers matching, and it is an original 4 speed car. With that in mind I decided to change the interior colour to black, trying to keep the look as close to original as possible and quite pleased with the outcome. I managed to pick up an M21 4 speed along the way, in combination with this 496 build now finished. Wait, finished doesn't ever really come into the equation when owning cars does it-lol. Over the next couple years, hope to upgrade to power steering, disk brakes.
Cheers, if I cant manage to post all 3 pics on this message, will post the others with no text.
