I was recently asked what firearm I would select if I was going to be a school safety officer?
keep in mind the goal here is to never have too use force and to avoid confrontations.
its those rare PEOPLE willing to harm others,
and not fire arms that are the cause of the occasional violence,
its people that you need to watch, If you want to maintain a safe environment,
ideally you keep a close eye on whats going on and contain and avoid having to deal with threats by recognizing
,isolating and controlling potential threats.
we don,t want security that thinks its job is too shoot terrorist , we need people in security that if possible ,will identify and prevent potential violence
the very last thing you want to do is be forced into a confrontation where guns are needed,
but, if you are to maintain security you need to be ready too quickly and effectively ,protect the kids if thats required
the same basic idea most of us should have regarding our personal home security
(theres an old saying that an ounce of preventions worth a pound of cure!)
well logically if I had the job of protecting the kids in any school I would sure start from the basic idea , that Id do my best to prevent the problem from ever reaching the point that a firearm would be required, I'd want to install dozens of high quality video cameras,
all access points, parking lots, surrounding access roads, gates, internal hallways should be on constant video monitoring, and several large screen, high quality monitors in the guard room, with click/zoom/pan and record, cameras, and directional mics,
and having a good two directional, paging system, in key locations, and mount those cameras, and directional mics, where they were not easy too reach or disable, would be smart, Id want a secure guard room, with several large clear video, screens with a battery backed -up, and generator backed -up, video, security system, with wireless and copper communication links to the local police.
Id want at least two well trained officers on the school property at all times.
Id want the school to have carefully designed limited controlled pedestrian access and designed for very limited vehicle access, that could be opened and rapidly accessible, if required starting with several 7 foot tall non-easily climbed fences and gates.
Id require both officers have at least quarterly firearms qualification testing, both officers have basic trauma wound care training and on site medical supplies. both officers carry shoulder mount, audio, two way communications.
in and ideal world 10%-25% of the teachers at a school would also be carefully screened, then trained both firearms use and trauma care, and carry concealed.
obviously the security people and carefully screened and well trained ,concealed carry armed teachers would be well aware of who each other are, and occasionally train as a team!
teachers choosing to carry concealed should receive some minor benefit's like a couple extra days a year paid vacation, and priority parking as an incentive!
given a personal choice of handgun,
Id select a CZ75 9mm long slide, as they are exceptionally accurate and if properly maintained very very, dependable.
Id require both officers to be on site 1 hour before and after school hours , and at least one officer be watching the screens in a locked control room at all times, while the other walked and inspected the grounds, with check locations he had to check in with and dial a 6 digit random security code that changed daily with key pads all over the school.
yes Id want the guys to wear level 4 body armor , and carry an accurate side arm, and have on site access to carbines in a reasonable caliber (m1 carbine comes to mind)
but thats not as important as extensive training, and (constant detailed and clear, video and audio, surveillance.)
if you can,t in real time identify a potential problem you can,t effectively,
react too it quickly and logically.
yeah all that would cost money, but its not unreasonable to keep your kids safer.
(too bad no ones yet found a way too tax stupidity , or political corruption)
