Manual tranny problem

I have a 98 Siverado, 6 vortex. I have no idea what size.

A few nights ago without any warning whatsoever it went out wile driving a steady speed of 65-70 mph. It simply made a POP and started to coast to a stop. At first I thought the fan belt had broken as the noise was not loud at all. It would and still does shift just as easy as it ever did but nothing happens except in 4th gear. 4th will still function but none of the other gears will at all, including reverse. You can start the engine, put it in gear, release the clutch, crawl under it and watch as the drive shaft does nothing.

40 years ago I would have rebuilt it in an hour or two while drinking a beer and bs-ing with a friend. I no longer drink and any friends I have would be unavailable if I mentioned work. I am also 40 years older and this transmission is not out of a 1951 Chevy.

Eventually, most likely when it gets too cold to ride a motorcycle, which won't be long, I will pay someone to replace it. Between now and then can someone tell me what the hell happened? No grinding, no forcing gears, I baby my vehicles, etc. I would think only 1 or 2 gears would be gone instead of only having 1 remaining.

Your thoughts?

without pulling the trans out and inspecting it after dis-assembly I can,t guess as Ive never had that year car/truck , vortec 6 transmission apart
but I bet there some members that might know??
It sure would help if you knew exactly what transmission model you have

I know 2 things about cars and trucks made after the late 60's. First, that's when they started putting electronic thingys in them. Second, I should not even attempt tp work on them. Give me a Chevy or Plymouth/Dodge from the mid 50's and older and I can work on them blindfolded. Open the hood on my 98 truck and there may be 4-5 things I can identify. Maybe.

You most likely have 4th gear only because the power goes straight thru from the input shaft to the output shaft. You just lock the two shafts together.

It would appear that you broke something in the secondary shaft (Not sure what it's called). I think everything other than high gear goes thru this shaft to get the different gear ratios.

You are probably correct. If I can keep the old transmission when I buy a replacement I will take a peek inside and see what happened, if possible
