The stock G body rear is a Dinky 7.5" ring gear with 26-spline axle shafts.
Just 350 ft/lbs of flywheel enginect orque will cause it to grenade apart.
Buick Grand National 8.5" rear is stronger but not enough still for this application.
12- bolt better but still marginal strength.
Dana 60 Rear the best option.
Need 4.56 gears to make a true street warrior normally aspirated most combos with 4500 stall.
If ypu have at least 440 cubic inches rear gearing becomes not so critical on the street.
Making 500 + ft/lbs. off idle to redline with mild cams .

or you could be a real rebel and save alot of money putting a ford 8.8 in it!

all the gm guys at once say NOOOOOOO!
The Ford 8.8 " is actually a pretty good rear.
Build with Strange 33-spline axles. C-clip elimanators.
Full Race spool. Rear diff cover brace.
Near copy cat of the Chevy 12-bolt Chevelle-Camaro rear

the 8.8 with 35 splines and stock fox platform suspension was good for low 8's at 155+ mph about 1000hp never broke it, 70-80 passes and one day the car hit a wall

considering you can get a good core for under 100 bucks at every u-pick junkyard in america, parts are cheap and plentiful to build up, and guys are running 7.0 and 7.1 on slicks at 200+mph i would argue that the weight savings alone vs a 9" or a dana 60 make the ford 8.8 THE best rear diff in the world

can get a good deal on a rpm intake wil that be a big diff vs the bowtie i got ?

without testing its very difficult to tell!
Id suspect from previous tests I've done that there's a 5-10hp advantage but at times I've seen less.

I have built Ford 8.8" rears for the 5.0 guys in the past Phil.
Chi town. I am known for building bullet proof sub 8-second rears with that crowd.
One issue is the 8.8 rears can bend at both axle tubes.
That much Torque & HP.
Back brace welding housings like 4X4 guys do is one option.
Most refuse to use A Pro Mod 9" inch or Dana 60.
They are super proud of the 8.8" rears I build for them.

I am quite sure I saw a Dana somewhere at the lot at Dirk's place in Boortmeerbeek...

;)
Have to look carefull Dorien.
Dana 44 looks similar to a Dana 60.
But is much bigger the Dana 60.
All 60's are full floating but 1966-71 Mopar Musclecar.
1961-64 F100 Dana 60-2.
Jeep Dana60-2.

Go back & take pictures Dorien.
Pull the rear cover off if you can.
Pay only good $ if its a Posi unit.
Many Mopar Musclecars were exported in the 1960'S & '70's.
A few Hemi equipped cars.
Most were 383- 440 cars.
Later 6-pack Holley Tripower cars with 4-speed had the Dana 60 rear too.
The A body Dart Dana 60 rear Hemi race car & 1970 -71 Hemi Cuda Challanger Dana 60 are the rarest.
Just a few hundred made total.
A body Dana be worth at least $5-6k today.
E body Dana 60 $4-5,500.
