Starter / ring gear issues

Gee, I had a box of them years back (like 35 years back:rolleyes:) - one was even the cast iron nose (I still have that one - VERY HEAVY).
I'm gonna have to do some looking.

I found a few 10 MT Chevy Starters on ebay. Small supply for Mecruiser Chevy powered boats.
That 496 8.1 LITER Big Chevy Gear reduction starter a good alternative.

Pontiac -Olds V8 a problem....
Found 1 10 MT Pontiac.
Going to buy it.

Get the Starter motor out.
Take a picture for me.
I know GM, Ford, & Chrysler starter motors better than anyone here stock OEM & Full Drag Race aftermarket models.

Several Variations of the 10 MT were made.
Special Armatures were used in early models with no part numbers stamped.
Only a Guy like me can Identify visual looking at a picture or in person.
Same with the Bendex pinion gear assembly.

Bench test it.
A Battery jumper pack will work.
Looks almost new.
Possible issues the Bendix shift fork installed backwards.
Shift fork worn out.
Bad Bendix.
Bad Starter solenoid.
Wrong return spring installed.
They come apart easy a 10 MT.

I had starter issues with my smallblock also.. Found that there was a crack in the outer bolt hole on the block.

Its 76 but I have up and just bought new starter en flexplate

Ok so we have an early Pontiac GTO with a 1976 400 SBC engine swap.
A Tremec Transmission.

Any idea what the Flywheel tooth count is you bought ?
153 or 168 teeth ?
Look at the reciept for the part number and lookup with Google or post it for me.

I don't recall when Chevy went to the staggard bolt pattern starter.

I have a 1971 Chevy 400 that is now a 410 on the engine stand at home that was my late Bud Bills 90% completed project.
Seem to recall its a straight by pattern starter block.
Might have been later 70's when Chevy switched over to stagger bolt pattern or both.

153 Teeth flywheel or Flexplate started with the 700 R4 Trans And 1-piece rear main seal typical stated.
But I think it started with the 1984 C4 Corvette Crossfite 350 engine.

400 Chevy all used 168 tooth flywheel.
Use matching starter .

Come 1987 TBI Chevy Truck into Vortech 350 to 1999 it's confusing because they are all 168 Teeth flexplates.
Cars same era had 153 Teeth flexplates.

I took a look at the 1971 400 /410 SBC just now.
It has both straight and staggard starter bolt holes drilled and tapped.
3 starter bolt holes total.

If figured out a few nights back what Chevy cars had the Cast Iron starter nose 10MT.
The 1965-1969 427 Big Big Chevrolet Corvette all had them.

So you never said WHAT the starter engagement problems actually were.

1 thing to check while it's out - remove the solenoid cap. Underneath is a round copper contact. Inspect the bottom side and where it makes contact with the 2 "bolts" for signs of arcing. Those bolts can be rotated 180* to get a new clean contact.

Both gears are basically not ( or hardly) engaging. The one on top of the other...
Starter moves forward. But the gear hovers above the ringgear...
400ci small block we had in the car ( our elco not the gto) was fine.
Bought another block to rebuilt ( see last years posts)
And now no good.

Pontiac V8 Flywheels & Flexplates are 166 Tooth counts .
Early 1955-1961 are 176 teeth.
No way either would bolt up to a 400 SBC.

Money No object.
Want the Very Best Mini Racing starter this is It.
