as many of you know theres long bloody scrape marks from my bleeding finger nails in the concrete as ID dragged , kicking and screaming into the computer age, but IM slowly coming to use computers and grudgingly admit that in some newer car applications they can be a huge help, one tip! read the darn instructions carefully several times...then get your computer conversant kids to explain it in English

youll need this cable or a similar one matching your year cars aldl connector

or
Datamaster ( gives 20 free logs before you have to buy)

Both allow real time monitoring as you saw being done
or recording ( called a log ) of engine functions with playback of the log just like using a VCR

Power Programmers

Like control modules, power programmers reconfigure your vehicle's on board computer to perform at peak levels. But, they work a little differently. Rather than being permanently installed into your electrical system, power programmers are plug-n-play devices.

Before hitting the road, you connect the power programmer to your OBD-II Port, which is handily located right under your dashboard. You will then answer a number of questions about your vehicle, any modifications you have made, and what level of power you want. Based on how you respond to the questions, the power programmer then uploads a new set of operating instructions to your vehicle's computer. The new operating program only has to be uploaded once, so you can pack away your power programmer or experiment with some of the other settings and modes. Best of all, the whole process only takes about 10 minutes, and the only tools you'll need are your own two hands.

The advantage of power programmers is that you have greater control over the tuning of your system. For example, Edge Performance Products let you recalibrate your onboard computer to any changes in tire size, speed rating or even your rear-end gear ratio. These changes dramatically affect your vehicle's performance, but your computer doesn't know to recalculate unless you use a power programmer to communicate with it. Moreover, many of our power programmers from top name brands like Hypertech and Superchips let you tune your engine for regular octane usage instead of the usual 91 or higher fuel grade.

Like control modules, power programmers are made by a number of notable manufacturers, such as Superchips, Hypertech, Edge Products, Diablo Sport, SCT, Jet Performance, Quadzilla, BD Diesel and Edelbrock.

YOU SHOULD NEVER DEPEND ON A SINGLE SOURCE OF INFO<GET A INFRARED TEMP GUN AND LEARN TO READ SPARK PLUGS

(Ive used this one for years)

IVE come to use reading spark plug condition, as a viable and reliable cross check on fuel/air ratio meter readings, while the new fuel air ratio meters are great you can still learn a great deal reading spark plugs, checking a vacuum gauge, verifying exhaust back pressure and graphing your ignition advance curve and using a infrared heat gun to read exhaust temps

in the next couple months as the datsun comes back into service with the factory motor ill try to document the process for efi tuning in relation to turbochargers and all that. hopefully can help someone out looking for answers.

I will probably be that guy watching like a hawk as you tune. As I will venturing down the tuning road soon enough!!!

yeaif everything comes together you should be right on my heels time frame wise

I hope so life has it's way of throwing curve balls and I am seeing the real cost of what this is gonna take to make a reality also allot of nickel and diming adds up quick allong with big parts also.

you arent lying... thats why im putting the 280zx back on the street with the factory turbo motor. i just genuinely cannot afford to do a v8 swap in the foreseeable future and i miss driving that car. plus im trying to get out of the corvette.

The 280 Z Turbo Engine can still get up & Shit Ass Fast Gone Phil.
You have showed us all the Turbo Phil Way.
And much about EFI Tuning.
More than anyone else has.

I will show you the Brian 455 Poncho way soon.
Its a Low buck fun build too.
The Torque Power band of them is increadable for a Big lump of cast iron.
Only aluminium present is the timing cover.

Fel Pro Pontiac V8 High performance Race Gasket Full sets found & bought. #2806.
Bought 2 sets. $80 each. $160. Saved $120 .
$140 Summit price each.

Poncho and olds motors are gobs of torque I used to have the 403 in my 79 TA
I really like Oldsmobile V8's too like You.
Grumpy don't care for them much.
But Olds Rocket V8 was around long before SBC & BBC.
303 In 1949.
Blew all away.
403 TA was actually faster than 400-4-speed Pontiac Engine TA.
& 403 Birds used 2.56 & 2.41 rear gears. Had more Torque.
Way under rated factory power rated.

455 Pontiac the ultimate earthmover factory stock & modded even better.

I was a much younger hot rodder back then but remember 185hp but I think upper 300s for torque. I believe the previous owner had changer the rear gearing also but I know it used get up and go with a 3800 stall full manual reverse pattern turbo 350. I miss that car hopefully some day I will get my hands on another one.

Every now & Then I run across a CHEVY GUY THAT LIKES Olds V8 as I do.
They do alot with what's there near stock.
Defies all Logic & Desktop Dyno Programs.

Wish you lived closer John.
I have an Olds 455 Blick with Crank.
2 1977 403's.
1965 Olds 425A engine 360HP & 470FT/LBS TORQUE.
The Olds 425 I will share & build up eventual here.
Sell all but keep a 403 Olds for myself

only problem with the 403 is the windowed mains unless you have one of the rare blocks that don't have them used to know the numbers. I have a friend with a late 70's cutlass t-top car with a 403 he said he's almost ready to sell I keep telling him hold on to it he will not be able to get another one. In high school every body rocked a cutlass or monte cheap and the 350 sbc and 350 rockets were common. Circle track and the price of scrap has taken most of those cars off the road (well at least here in the rusty north east)still see one every once in a while un molested with an old lady or man driving it .

Don't be scared of the windowed mains on a 403.
Flogged mine to 6k -7k RPM daily in past.
No main cap girdle used.
Joe Mondello loved the 403 also.

Ditto here.
Vintage gone in salvage yards.
Its Craigslist & Fleabay. Forum finds.

used to go to Mondello's site and dream of his parts
Joe gave me build tips over the phone several times back in 1998 on my 403.
The new guy I hear is not so knowledgable or honest at Mondellos.

I had a Job at work last year pulling the Engine from a 1967 Olds 442 Convertible Clone.
It was a base Cutlass with a 330 Olds 4bbl V8.
Engine was sent out to be rebuilt local.
A Mondello kit purchased.
Turned out to be a Shit China Kit.
Reassembled the car.
Replaced the Powerglide with a Turbo 350 & High stall.
Ok Power but not real impressive.
Long tube headers & 3" X pipe full exhaust.

A week went by & Cam went flat.
Not my doing. I never built the engine. Just installed & used supplied Comp Cams break in oil 30W.
Owner was pissed. Pulled Engine.
Removed Intake. Found China Lifters from Mondello New guy owner
A nightmare dealing with that new Assfuck .
Rebuild again.
Ok now 1-1/2 years later.

sad truth maximize profit margins at any cost and ruin a great company selling inferior products under a once quality name. I will be running crower solid lifters with face oiling with my cam change.

I have 2 sets of those Crower Cool Face Solid Lifters here John.
One for Pontiac V8 & One for Chevy.
They now have Crower Micro Finish Cool Face Lifters. Shine like a Silver Mirror.
Didn't opt for micro finish.
Something to consider $ option.
