yard sale scores

every once in a while I see something very obvious, that I've over looked.
Frank stopped at a yard sale and found a old office chair for sale, the back was ripped and the arm rest cracked but at $10 he still bought it,it looked roughly like this

after removing the back and arm rests, he had something that resembled

so for about $10 he had a decent adjustable height mechanics rolling seat

thats a great repurposing idea... it never would have occured to me to make a little stool out of a chair like that.

I did it also, I took a computer chair put the good leather top on my chair for the house, then I took a stool of my Dads and put the round cushion on the wheels off the computer chair that had the good leather chair. this what it looks like

I'm limited to a low budget due to supporting both my self and my sons family while Im retired on a medical disability, due to lower back issues and a crappy ankle while ,on a pension, but occasionally I find awesome deals on tools at yard sales , so,always check yard sales, when you get the chance and have a few dollars in your pocket, today I picked up about a dozen taps ranging from 1/8" to about 3/4" for $5 total, if you ever priced new taps you can readily appreciate the good value. a single tap can easily cost $7-$30 dollars
it puts a smile on this old geezers face to get easily $50-$60 dollars in virtually new taps for $5

I stopped at a yard sale today a guy had these screw drivers, linked below, still in the package with a sticker marked $20, along with assorted other tools in a large cardboard box.
I picked up a larger single screw driver, in the box along with the pack, that was marked $2 also and told him to throw it in and Id buy both the pack and one larger screw driver for the $20, he accepted the offer, after looking me over for a few seconds...probably figured I NEEDED a bargain

yeah! probably not the best deal of all time, but if your like me you can never have too many screw drivers or various mechanic type hand tools

You don't dress up in a suite and tie when you go to garage sales??? :D

Maybe after I retire, I will have time to stop more often at garage sales.

anyone scored any thing exceptionally good in a yard sale score recently?
one of my neighbors recently found a set of car ramps, that look remarkably similar to these for $100

One neighbor of mine ,he found two rather extensive sets,SAE/METRIC TAP & DIE SETS MADE IN EUROPE NOT CHINA, at a yard sale, that were for sale, where a widow was moving after selling her home,
the garage was being cleared out, and it was rather obvious she had no clue what the stuff was,
that the tools had a bit of surface rust on only a few pieces and one or two missing pieces but he only paid a negotiated $130 for both sets.
I hope I can slip him a few bucks extra profit and get the stuff as he has as much use for it as a pelican has for snow shoes as he can,t and won,t,
even attempt to do an oil change, he simply bought the stuff because hes seen similar stuff around my shop and realizes its not cheap, and he got it at a bargain price.

I buddy I stopped to see told me about a yard sale up the road from him he said he stopped & they had some hunting stuff so I rode up to look & bought a Bushnell lighted reticle 2x12 scope & a Tasco 3x9 scope new in the box for $10.00 each

if they function correctly when used, that would seem to be a spectacular deal!

I had a friend mention recently that he found a 354 Chrysler hemi some guy had stuffed under his work bench for 60 years ,
that he picked up from the guys widow for $50 and the promise that he would..
"clean up any nasty oil stains on the concrete that greasy old engine my husband saved for LORD KNOWS WHY"
after he took it out of the garage.
he found it only because he did what I do frequently,
and stopped and asked if they might have any old engines or transmissions or associated parts they might want too sell,
you would be amazed at the number of times that people at yard sales have stuff like that in the back of a garage under a tarp,
but its too heavy or awkward, or difficult to move so it just gets ignored for years

They are both on guns & sighted in . The Bushnell is on my 300 savage & the Tasco is on Colt AR

I've just got too drag my old butt out of the sack earlier in the day, I was driving over too get breakfast at about 9 A.M. Saturday and I see a sign that theres a yard sale, so I stop and as I'm pulling in I see some guy with
a nice used engine stand

he and a friend of his is struggling to get up into his pick-up truck bed,and a cam bearing installation tool, with a $40 sticker
LIL-18000a.jpg

propped up against the fender ,
the engine stand is the same type I have several of ,
but it had a bright orange sticker that listed the price as $50 and those cost a bit over $100-$139 depending on where you get them and if they are on sale, and have a discount ticket.
at that price I would have jumped on it, but it was the cam bearing tool that was the deal... yes I own one already, but at that price I'd have owned TWO in a heartbeat
those tools generally sell for $140 plus

yeah, the guy got a couple deals, and I wish him well, but feel a bit frustrated at missing out on the bargains....you just never know what youll find at yard sales.

I was a couple minutes late this A.M., the wife wanted to go out for coffee....On the drive out I had to listen to her bitch about , you always seem to notice those yard sales...I'm hungry....
I stopped at a yard sale, for two minutes... only to see some guy walking out down the driveway with a HOLLEY BBC tunnel ram intake under his arm,
it had a post-it taped to the side with a $100 price written on it, and it looked almost in new condition.
I walked up to see if there was any other car related goodies..... not much of interest left, unfortunately... you'll occasionally find bargains,
if you look, but they are not all that common,
you may look for weeks before finding anything thats a bargain.

Happy wife/happy life--until you miss out on other things wanted/needed in life before you die.

I will generally stop at any yard sale I see if time permits,
simply because you never have a clue what might be offered for sale!
I look for deals on mechanic and machinist tools and car parts etc.
I was out this morning and saw a sign, and hes got an older Milwaukee , reciprocating saw marked $20,
I stop and find the guy has a large 4 ft x 8 ft table packed 3 ft high with plastic fishing lure boxes, easy 7-9 dozen un-opened packs of soft plastic worms and similar lures,
milwaukee-reciprocating-saws-6519-30-64_1000.jpg

each box of fishing baits/lures is marked, 45 cents, 60 cents etc,
theres also dozens and dozens of soft plastic baits, jerk baits etc.
I ask the guy if theres a package deal discount if he will sell me the whole table full.
theres easily $400-$500 in RETAIL pricing on whats offered,
he grabs a full size military style duffel bag and says,
you take it ALL, $60
I say, Ill take that deal,
but I need to go to the ATM,
heres $20 to hold it,
,I,ll be back in 15 minutes.
I come back,
hes ADDED a couple small tackle boxes,
and the table looks even more stacked,
his wife says I made him get the rest of the crap,
he used to fish competitively,
hes too old now and were moving ,
so if you can use it GOD BLESS YOU!
a fully stuffed duffel bag and most of my trunk space,
barely held the contents of the bargain deal,
\ I've yet to sort through, but I certainly got my dollars worth
:D

yeah, I fish, salt and fresh water ,
and hunt both big and small game,
with BOW, rifle, handguns and muzzle loaders
cast bullets and reload my own ammo,
I also spend considerable time most day's,
in my shop, doing auto repair work, modifying cars and engines,
I do some welding, and use a milling machine ,
and in spare moments I try to placate my wife,
do home maintenance, run a web site,
try to answer questions on this web site,
try to fix all my family related problems,
mow my 5 acres,etc.
and and, of course the endless HONEY DO LIST

but according too my wife,
I spend most time in the shop working on my and my friends cars,
and ignoring my wife, while hunting and fishing
she thinks I should watch TV game shows , (WHICH I DETEST)
with her at 10pm-3 AM, to RELAX IN MY SPARE TIME
