400ci small block fuellie heads which cams should be used

On ignition distributor gears...
I bought this cheapo ignition system.
But since I have gone trough buying quality parts ( and reading trough all these treads....)
Which ignition shaft and rotor would you suggest to combine with the edelbrock camshaft?( I am sure there are treads around here...)
Thx
Davis DUI Ignition , The Davis DUI HEI Ignition. Excellent.

Or A Magneto.
Vertex Magneto is not for the inexperienced.
I use on the street in my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix.
They Need to be tuned up time to time.
I have all the special tools & SUN distributor machine to rebuild them & test them.
Another Hobby of mine. Sometimes I rebuild a few for dirt track racers here in Illinois.

We have the sun tester too!
To synchronise points etc...
Davis DUI is most practical and best 12 volt DC Battery ignition out there for Street Strip.
One is made for street.
Another for high rpm race.
You want the street model for your classroom Elcamino project 400.

Blueprinted fully rebuilt Vertex Mag will cost $800-1,000 from me.
Parts are not inexpensive to buy my cost.
Low cost good cores hard to find.
Used is $450 -600 Chevy V8 a good core.
Pontiac V8 & Olds V8 when I find them for myself are now $800-1000 a good core.

I have 1 Chevy V8 good Vertex Mag core I bought at decent price.
Have to rebuild it yet.
Works.

Rest I have keeping for Chevy V8 & Pontiac V8 projects.

Which ignition shaft and rotor would you suggest to combine with the edelbrock camshaft?
I don't know what material was used for the Edelbrock camshaft, but you need to make sure
the distributor has a compatible material which you can figure out here or ask Edelbrock. I'm
assuming you already have the camshaft, if not then you can probably get it with a different
gear material. Hopefully it's not a brass gear needed for the distributor, they wear fast and
have to be changed periodically. Not so practical if it's a street driven car.

Sorry I don't know off the top of my head and can't quote you all the different compatible options.

check with the manufacturer anytime you have similar questions, on any valve train or ignition component.
but Id bet the stock distributor gear is what will be recommended,on any new engine build with a new cam installed.
this whole web site is designed to make it far FAR easier on guys wanting to build the required knowledge base required to learn the skills youll require to excell in this hobby.
:D:cool::rolleyes:

coat any new cam and distributor gears with a good moly paste lube

READ THE RELATED INFO CAREFULLY AND USE A GOOD MOLY LUBE ON THE DISTRIBUTOR AND CAM GEARS

MSD-8561.jpg

most stock chevy v8 distributors will use this gear. .491 diam.

many aftermarket distributors will use this gear .500 diam.

Again

Thank you very much!!
As always also with my own projects I always doubt everything ( and we get very good results)

When using the moly paste.
How does it mix with the oil?
I have never used this product and believe me
We have engines with a lot of gears in them!

Preference on assembly lube?

50% marvel mystery oil

and 50% crane moly lube, or the paste moly, the mix of moly paste and M.M.O. is generally applied liberally with the paint brush, in multiple applications to surfaces like cam gears, timing chains, lifters, rockers, and cam lobes, to provide an extra layer of lubrication protection on initial engine start up.

what Ive used for decades
but this works

I have used J&B WELD EPOXY on a large magnet

on the base of an aluminum 1/2 cup measuring cup I purchased at a yard sale for 25 cents to mix up the mixture, the magnet allows me to stick the cup to the block oil pan rail or engine stand where its handy too get at, and I simply brush on the mix with a 1" paint brush, with synthetic bristles that won,t shed
molypaste.jpg

OH! slide it off the block don,t try to just pull it off , its going to be much less messy that way trust me!
when your done , wipe it clean and stick it inside the lid of your tool box , after placing it in a ziploc bag to prevent it from picking up trash while in storage

I can understand the molylube on the gears.
By why on the shells?
We allways prime our engines from a pressure barrel. This also gives us a good opportunity to check if the oil flows everywhere.

I did read something on torque converters ,flexplates and damage to the trustbearings.
Could you send those links please?

Captains log:

You can't buy molycote in this country as it is hazardous ....
Il get it from Amazon....

Just got the con rods in...
Hopefully the cranks' magnaflux is negative!
Al parts are painted. Pressure washed and dry iced ( works fantastic).

How thin can we go with the bronze bush in the con rods? I think we have
