357 Magnum revolver was very popular with FBI agents during the 1930s and 1940s.
The Registered Magnum had a specially heat-treated cylinder and case-head recesses to improve its overall strength.
Many law enforcement officers ordered their . 357 Magnum revolvers with Smith & Wesson's grip adaptor for enhanced control.




hard cast gas check bullets cast from 95% ww alloy and 5% pure tin by weight, cast like the linked bullet mold below,
seem to work very effectively in a 357 mag revolver ,as the bullets penetrate very well yet still expand a bit on impact.
if loaded with a firm crimp and the longest length the revolver cylinder allows for hunting

YES DEPENDING ON THE CARTRIDGE AND COMPONENTS AND THE BARREL LENGTH,
THE BETTER 10MM SEMI AUTO PISTOLS ARE ROUGHLY EQUIVALENT IN POWER TO THE SIMILAR BARREL LENGTH 357 REVOLVERS,
IN SOME LOADS EITHER CALIBER WILL EXCEED THE POWER OF THE OTHER, BOTH CARTRIDGES HAVE A LONG WELL DOCUMENTED HISTORY OF BEING VERY EFFECTIVE PERSONAL DEFENSE CARTRIDGES.
the advantage of the revolver is it can reliably handle much weaker and mildly more powerful handloads that the semi auto pistol can,
but the semi autos have 8-to- 17 shot capacity magazines from the factory ,with aftermarket mags up to 30 cartridge capacity in some cases.
in theory the semi autos should have a marginal advantage in accuracy,
but in the real world most people shoot the better quality revolvers more accurately.
the 357 mag and 10mm auto cartridges are rather unique in that both are at a power level making them marginally more difficult to master due to recoil and muzzle blast issues
but that's simply the result of being on the threshold of having enough power and penetration with select loads to make either cartridge devastatingly effective for closer range personal defensive use and up to having the power to hunt medium game like deer and hogs very effectively and even ELK and bear can be killed if the correct loads are used in skilled hands

remember you calculate power/energy with this formula

bullet weight in grains x velocity x velocity divided by 450240= foot pounds of energy

and yes as always,
bullet construction,
precise bullet placement,
a knowledge of the games anatomy,

all have a huge effect on potential lethality
