I have a Gen.VI 454 block, along with a forged rotating assy. from a 502.Got a new set of assembled Chevy Performance aluminum oval port heads with 2.19/1.88 valves.Currently the block is in the m/s getting the normal once over, along with the crank and rods getting balanced. All the other stuff to complete this engine will have to be bought.I would like some input on what pistons to use, carb.,manifold, cam combos. This is going in a '69 El Camino with TH400/2000 stall, and 12 bolt posi.with 3:42's.Wanting something stout for the street.
how can you balance the crank and rods without the pistons?
a "TH400/2000 stall,and 12 bolt posi.with 3:42's."
and that forged crank and rods and Gen.VI 454 block,
with the correct aftermarket pistons will make a 454-468 displacement depending on the bore size
and your desire to drive on the street (assuming pump gas) would have me looking for 9.5:1-10:1 pistons , too maximize torque, as the higher compression tends to increase efficiency
but you want to keep the compression low enough so as too not get into detonation issues as long as you use premium octane fuel
and a fairly mild hydraulic roller cam.
heres a list of decent cam suppliers why not call each and get suggestions,

while ID sure call and talk to the tech departments on at least 5 suppliers,
I think youll find something like this meets your needs,
and personally Id suggest a 2700 rpm stall converter and an edelbrock air gap intake,
with a 750 cfm vacuum secondary carb, with that cam (below) it will really wake up the combo
