do you always/ GENERALLY, carry a BACK-UP WEAPON WHEN HUNTING?

one of the guys I used to regularly hunt with in Florida called to tell me, about what was going on lately and to B.S. and tell about a hunt he had made last year.(now Id say 90% or more of the guys I used to hunt with have a concealed carry license, and carry daily, but I've noticed that when we go hunting a few guys only carry a shotgun or rifle and leave handguns at home..)
(lets call him JIM)
as a general rule its always better to hunt with a friend and let several people know where youll be hunting, Jim expected a buddy to meet him where they hunt, but on this occasion, the guy he generally hunted with never showed up, claiming he had a dead battery , and just decided to go back to bed, and never called JIM, to let him know...(thats total B.S.)
he, JIM, had gotten up at about 4 am, he was 1/2 asleep when he grabbed his back-pack, licenses, etc. he had grabbed the marlin 45/70 lever action, he generally hunts with(BTW 45 grains of RL7 under a 405 grain gas check, bullet works really well in that marlin)

and JIM being a paramedic by trade has generally carried a shoulder holstered handgun,
he owns a shoulder holster and S&W 8" 357 mag revolver, a back-pack with a few snacks (granola bars, beef jerky , instant coco, and a few items like a cell phone , canteen, several cigarette lighters, T.P. baby wipes, knife, sharpener 2.5 gallon zip loc bags, his blood pressure meds, etc. jumped in his jeep, and drove out to where he hunts about 30 miles north-west of lake Okeechobee, expecting to see his buddy already out there, (btw, this is one reason I generally think having a shoulder stock elastic cartridge holder that holds 8-10 cartridges on the rifle being a good idea, and why I usually meet hunting friends at an all night donut shop for coffee before we actually go into the woods on a hunt)

he parks in a very secluded area on what could only generously be referred to a dirt road that consisted of two parallel, very rarely used, over grown, tire tracks, wondering aimlessly acrost an are of scrub and light woods, well out in an area that is mostly scrub pine and palmetto thickets,

as he gets out of the car , he searches through his back-pack and realized he had left his 45/70 ammo on the kitchen table.
anyway he's now realizing he's holding a useless. unloaded rifle, and he's now only got a shoulder holster with a 357 mag revolver , under his camo hunting vest, he contemplates just going home, cussing at himself, for being careless , and not having extra ammo in his back pack, for the rifle like the hand full of 357 mag ammo he has in the back pack, but decides to leave the rifle in the jeep under the seat, and just go hunting,
after a few hours of wondering rather aimlessly checking out the surrounding thickets, for game, he sees several does, but no bucks and hears hogs several times, but just never sees any due to the dense vegetation, being taller than the hogs.
as he reruns to his jeep, he sees he has company, as he's walking to the jeep a vehicle (swamp buggy) basically a modified truck frame, without a truck body, just two seats and a large flat deck area, behind the seats, with 6" tall earth mover tires, installed on custom made rim adapters, pulls up
think THE MOVIE DELIVERANCE ... he says he felt he almost heard banjos
similar to this picture,

and keep in mind ( he looks unarmed and he's alone miles from a paved road, as the shoulder holsters under his camo vest.) the two guys, driving the buggy look like they have not had a change of clothes in weeks, one guy in the swamp buggy ask him what he's doing, "way out in the middle of no ware alone" THEIR WORDS.. he senses potential trouble ..., and notices the swamp buggy tracks are already all around his jeep , and the door on the jeep is open,... he left it closed and locked, he briefly looks and notices the marlin rifles missing.. but realizes starting an argument while he's alone miles from any back-up might not be ideal) the two guys ask him if he's seen any game , and he says yeah, I called my buddy, about an hour ago, on the cell phone, and he's on his way out with a couple of my friends to help me retrieve the deer.
there's a brief discussion between these two guys , at this point JIM pulls out the 8" S&W 357 mag revolver, and just points it at the ground, in front of his jeep, , and with it in his hand says , yeah, I shot that buck at about 120 yards, one shot dropped him on his nose"
hearing that, one of the guys seems rather mad, seeing JIM is now obviously armed, but they eventually drive away, and my friend thinks these guys may have been looking to do more than just steal his rifle, (obviously he had no proof that they had stolen that rifle, only that he was missing the rifle ,) " keep in mind many times , just the presents of a firearm that could be used ,once seen by potential criminals ,
is enough of a deterrent to prevent criminal actions"
he later finds his bumper jacks missing also, he filled out a police report but has yet to hear back.

Reasonably Decent Bear Protection In A Handgun

I watched the video above and its almost sure to open your eyes in how difficult it can be to stop a bear with a hand gun. ITS AS ALWAYS DEPENDENT ON YOUR PERSONAL SKILL LEVEL.( AND EQUIPMENT CHOICES) FAST...

if you watch the video, its interesting, info, they ask you to comment on the attack and how the hunters handled the repeated attacks
obviously , we did not get enough info on the ammo used, the real conditions, distances, etc. we are told only that a 30/06 and 30/30 were used, nor where the hunters hit the bear to make rational & logical comments, based on facts and the damage done, or lack of damage to the bears anatomy.
now granted they stated its in the early 1950s so bullet tech sucked. (and its obvious shot placement sucked) , no bear takes repeated shots to the vital organs (even from a 30/30 or 30/06) and remains functional very long.
now in the 1980s-to- today, if hunting elk, I generally carry a 375 H&H or 340wby, or a 358 win BLR all loaded with 250-270 grain bullets , and a 44 mag revolver loaded with 310 grain hard cast bullets a big improvement over the guns and ammo quoted they used.
maybe I've been lucky , but every bear I've seen, or my buddy's have seen, or confronted in 5 decades ran at the sight of hunters, or at least after a gunshot to the ground, near them
