longer term camshaft storage

on occasion you'll run into a killer deal on several cams, youll want to store long term, or you'll pull a cam from an engine you intend to re-use and you don,t know how long the cam will be shifting around before you get back to it. naturally you'll want to prevent it from rusting or getting damaged.
get a section of 2" pvc pipe, glue an end cap

on one end, and buy a rubber cap with a radiator clamp

for the other end, insert the cam, pour in a pint of oil and stand it on end (PVC CAP DOWN) some place it can,t get knocked over, label the outside of the pvc pip with a black magic marker with the cam specs on a 3"x5" card in an envelope taped to the outside so you know what the contents are -1-3-6-12 years from now when you go to use the cam.
if you buy new cams I suggest basically the same method, but use 3" pvc pipe and slip the whole cam still in its shipping carton into the pvc pipe after you soak it down liberally with oil and place it back in its shipping tube or carton, the extra protection the PVC tubing provides and the total exclusion of moisture insures the cams will be fine for re-use, store the cams where they won,t get knocked around or crushed.

roller lifters, rockers, push rods, timing gears and timing chains, etc, should be stored in 1/2 gallon zip loc bags with a couple tablespoons of marvel mystery oil then sealed in tupperware for years of trouble free storage
