yeah, maybe I'm partly addicted to acquiring tools ,and learning new skills,
but I've found that having those tools makes this auto modification, and trouble diagnosis hobby far easier
so what new welders, valve spring load testers, plasma cutters, piston ring compressors,
engine stands, engine test stands, micrometers, bore gauges, infrared temp guns,
trouble code scanners, multi- meters, drill presses, milling machines, pneumatic impact guns,
etc. (or new major engine components like blocks, heads, cranks, rod and piston sets, etc.)
have you recently acquired or have you been saving up to purchase?
have you found any really good deals that other members might want to take advantage of ?
and yes it really helps if you have a well documented plan on what your trying to accomplish,
what the parts are likely to cost, where you can get the parts and machine work done,
if you personally can't do the work, and what machine work will be required
you certainly don't want to buy tools, or parts, you'll rarely use or tools or parts that don't help you reach your goals.
I don't know how others feel, but I really like having the better quality tools and having learned the skills ,
allowing me to avoid having to visit machine shops ,where most of the time the guy behind the counter either ,
doesn't really give a crap, if the works done correctly, or has no clue how the work should be done correctly,
in fact some guys I've dealt with had no idea what I was requesting be done, until the machinist came out to talk,
and some times even then, I had the uneasy feeling the whole group was clueless.
or looks at the work as his route to a three week all expense paid vacation out of my checking account balance!
where I frequently feel I get over charged to do simple things like repairs or part fabrication ,
and I vastly prefer having the option to avoid having to deal with lower quality work,
than I would have done with my own tools and skills and experience.
some tools like a decent size and horsepower, air compressor or a nice TIG WELDER, a solid engine stand,
and having a 20 ton hydraulic press and a nice drill press in your shop, are rather universal
and yeah it can take you years to fill out your ideal tool list... mostly because as you get more knowledge
and gain new skills, your ability to use new tools tends to expand
here's a set of similar tools to what I used for DECADES
yeah it takes time and it costs a bit more than you might expect to work on engines,
yes you'll need the typical mechanic tools (ratchets, sockets, wrenches, screw drivers etc)
but its a hell of a lot cheaper in the long term to do as much as you can rather than pay local machine shops
yeah I have more tools, I failed to list yet,
but this gets you a decent start

A Few Basic Precision Tools
Hey GRUMPY, I need a few basic tools to measure bearing clearances and tools for installing a cam, etc, and suggestions? (and yeah, I'm not swimming in cash, so please take that into account!) keep in mind there's a long list of more expensive tools, like mills, lathes, various types of...

Id really appreciate your input on this question gentlemen
Id like to replace the TIG welder I was forced to sell in my move from FLA to TX. last year, I want to purchase a AC/DC pulse TIG with a 200-250 AMP rating, I kept the fluid torch, fluid pump and foot petal , and shield gas gauge set, assembly from the old miller TIG, so I may not need those...
