rear defroster problem

Can you tell me how that works? One of the sodered pieces that connects the window to the shocks is broken, but does my heater have to be working in order for my defroster in the rear to work?

no! its simply a fine wire that heats up inside the glass that defrosts & defogs or eventually over time melts snow on the rear glass, obviously air flow and interior car heat helps a great deal speeding up the proccess
