I want to start out by saying that this is not a 100% detailed tutorial but does cover all the major points. If you need it any more detailed than this, you probably shouldn't be tackling it in the first place.
I decided I was going to completely seperate both since I wanted to change out the motor and diff altogether and have the trans rebuilt. It just seemed easier to take it all out at once.
When I first started researching this, I went to my local Corvette dealer to see how much they would charge to do the seperation for me and then I would just pick up both pieces from them, change everything out and then have them put it back together. I was going to do this since I didn't have a lift at the time.
To begin with, their so called "Corvette Mechanic" told me it couldnt be done and that I would have to pick it up in 4 pieces(body, rear, front, and torque tube). He also qouted me $1300.00 just for the seperation, not including putting it back together,(something that looked like 4-5 hrs work.)
I told him no thanks. Bought a lift for $1500 and got after it.
Quick run down on the rebuild.
New motor - LS1 383(after tuning, should be in the area of 600HP)
Diff - replaced stock 2.73 with a new 3.42
Trans - Stage 3 rebuild
Otherthings I am doing - BBK Headers, PFADT hoses, line lock, new rotors and pads, dual cone intake, new exhaust, tailights tinted, body wetsanded for orange peel, rest of the underbody and engine bay cleaned up to look like new.
Coming soon - 100-300 shot nitrous.
