valve train set up

I have learned alot here at this site prior to my last build ,so on my next motor build I'm gonna start here again. This question concerns a 400 sbc, dart shp block, redone Profiler heads.
My question is should i install my head gaskets ( torqued or not torqued ) when I am going to set up the valvetrain and check for pushrod length? Last time I installed my head gaskets , and torqued them down and ran into a little clearance issue with the pushrods and couldn't clearance the heads like I wanted to while they were installed. THAT worked out with a guide plate adjustment. But can I install my MLS head gaskets and just snug them for push rod checking? What do you do?Or should I fully torque the gaskets and then possibly remove them and retorque if I need the head to be removed? I'm going to be spending MORE money this time and want to have everything planned out right. And I do want to build this thing myself, instead of having it built. Thanks

Don't they give a compressed thickness for the gasket you are buying? If so then it's
just a matter of measuring them in the uncompressed state and then subtracting that
from your pushrod measurements. So yes you should be able to just snug them up and
take your measurements.

If you go with a copper gasket then you can torque them several times and would not
have to compensate.

I would do it without the MLS gaskets and add that to your dimension, mls are one time use I think, be expensive ! JMHO

Ricks correct !
its not that difficult,
you just calculate the clearances based on the correct head gasket COMPRESSED thickness or if your using the copper head gaskets, just drop them on the block lay the head on top and don,t bother to install more than 3-5 head bolts finger tight, then measure clearances, one advantage of solid copper head gaskets is they don,t compress a great deal, AND CAN BE CAREFULLY CLEANED AND REUSED UP TO 5-OR-6 TIMES
