The state does not look at the application until you send in the paperwork that says you passed the class and shooting proficiency test.

You may complete the application for a new concealed handgun license online via the DPS website (click here). If you apply online with DPS you will automatically entered in the CHL database and can register for finger printing through IdentiGo. Fingerprints will only be handled and submitted through IdentiGo.

When you apply online at the end of the application process a BAR CODE receipt will be displayed. PRINT IT. Be sure and give the state your e-mail address otherwise once you close that window you can not get back to that receipt. The state will e-mail you a copy of the receipt. Even though you do not have to, we recommend you submit a copy of the receipt when you submit you licensing paperwork to the state.

A score of 70%, or 175 points of a possible 250, is required to pass. The target used is a B-27 which is a human-shaped silhouette target measuring 45 by 24 inches. All shooting is from the ready position, which means the gun is already in your hands and aimed in.

Number of Rounds Fired

The shooting test requires 50 rounds of ammunition

License-To-Carry Shooting Proficiency Distances

The LTC Shooting test is fired at three distances:

  • 3 yards – 20 rounds fired
  • 7 yards – 20 rounds fired
  • 15 yards – 10 rounds fired
The majority of students pass the proficiency test when they have completed shooting at 3 and 7 yards. However, all 50 rounds must be shot.

LTC Passing Score

The Texas LTC shooting test passing score is 175 points out of 250 points or a score of 70%. The state allows for three chances to pass the shooting test.

Remember, I have had students pass the shooting proficiency test with flying colors who fired a gun for the first time ever when they took the test.

texas concealed carry license

In Texas, a License to Carry (LTC) is required for concealed carry, but since 2021, it is not mandatory to carry a handgun in public without one if you meet certain qualifications. However, an LTC can provide additional benefits and is still a good option for some. To obtain an LTC, you'll need to complete a training course, pass a written exam, and demonstrate proficiency with a handgun.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Eligibility:
  • Generally, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for an LTC.
  • Military personnel and veterans may be eligible to apply at 18 years old.
    • Texas law also allows individuals aged 18-20 who have a protective order or emergency protective order to obtain an LTC.
2. Application Process:
  • STEP ONE Application: Download or apply for the LTC online through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
  • STEP TWO Shooting Proficiency: Demonstrate your ability to safely and accurately handle a handgun through a live fire exercise.
  • STEP THREE Training:You'll need to complete a four-to-six-hour training course covering handgun safety, laws, and safe carrySTEP FOUR STEP FOUR pass the Written Exam: Pass a written exam to demonstrate your understanding of handgun laws and safety.
    • STEP FIVE Fingerprinting: You'll need to get fingerprinted through L-1 Enrollment Services.
    • STEP SIX Submission: Submit your completed application, supporting documents (like the certificate of training), and the required fee to the DPS.
    • Approval: You will be notified by mail if your application has been approved.
3. Benefits of an LTC:
    • Additional Legal Protection:
An LTC may offer some additional legal protection, though the exact extent of this is not explicitly detailed in the search results.
    • Background Check Exemptions:
Having an LTC can potentially streamline the background check process when purchasing a firearm.
4. Cost:
    • The initial fee for an LTC is typically $40.
    • Renewal fees are also $40.
    • Some discounts may be available under specific circumstances.
For more detailed information and the latest updates, you can visit the Texas Department of Public Safety website.

well I had the opportunity to test & qualify for my TEXAS LTC (licence to carry) today, it was about a 5 hour class ,

and they only hold the class about once a month locally, the classes are, followed or preceded by qualification shooting
thus mostly lectures on when your not allowed to shoot, and what your responsibilities' are,and 1 hour at the range,
the range part was absurdly easy, the max you could score was 250 points
you generally have lots of time between shots
The LTC Shooting test is fired at three distances:

  • 3 yards – 20 rounds fired
  • 7 yards – 20 rounds fired
  • 15 yards – 10 rounds fired
I shot a 250 (one 9 ring) all the other shots were in the (X) but keep in mind the targets a 3-then 7- then 15 yards,
(keep in mind they allow you to use almost any common handgun, to qualify with, so I brought my most accurate revolver)
If Id used my 10mm glock Id have most likely shot a 245- 250-or so as it marginally less consistent
and (the x rings about the size of a hard boiled egg ) so its no challenge, to a well practiced pistol shot, I was the only one using a 357 revolver, the other 12 people in the class use semi autos (mostly 9mm) the written test is multiple guess (with mostly a-b-c-d options as answers) so even if you did not listen to the lecture ,I doubt you would fail if you have common sense and know the laws.
when I pulled out the 8" 357 S&W revolver the instructor looked at me and said WOW,..
." I did not think YOU were THAT OLD..
"and
( then he, grinned at me)
once you pass the written and range test you take the form down to a local place where the finger print and do a quick paperwork
form and mail it off, in theory you get the licence in the mail in 6-7 weeks according to the instructor
btw they also offered a form to sell you handgun liability insurance,

for a very reasonable cost, considering the potential cost vs the potential risk ,
if your ever forced to defend yourself.
I've used and prefered using revolvers for hunting for almost 6 decades,
so I guess that's one factor in my more consistent accuracy

The Texas concealed carry qualification target is the B-27 silhouette target, a human-shaped target measuring 24 by 45 inches that is divided into scoring rings. Shooters must hit the target at least 70% of the time ( your required to shoot a passing score of at least 175 out of 250 points) to pass the shooting proficiency test for the Texas License to Carry (LTC). You can view examples of this target on sites like KR Training or Texas Concealed Carry Institute.

with minimal instruction in proper handgun use and after gaining the required , skills, and with practice most people can pass this test rather easily

Target Details
  • Name: B-27 target

  • Dimensions: 24 inches wide by 45 inches tall

  • Appearance: A human-shaped silhouette, often blue or white, with scoring rings

  • Scoring:
    • 5 points for shots within the inner scoring rings

    • 4 points for shots in the next scoring ring

    • 3 points for shots on the silhouette outside of the scoring rings

    • 0 points for shots completely off the target
Key Aspects of the Qualification Test
  • Ammunition: A total of 50 rounds are fired.

  • Passing Score: You must score at least 70% (175 points out of a possible 250).

  • Starting Position: All shooting begins from the "ready position," with the gun already in your hands and aimed.

  • Optics: Red dot and green dot optics are permitted, but lasers are not.

  • Purpose: The test is designed to demonstrate safe handgun handling skills rather than being a difficult shooting challenge.

NEW COURT RULING MANDATE ALL STATES RECOGNISE YOUR CCW LICENCE
watch the video and take notes

(as the ruling also eliminates a huge percentage of existing state firearm ownership restrictions)
(ALL states personal concealed carry licenses must NOW be recognised in ALL states)

AND YES IM SURE SOME STATES WILL RESIST THE CHANGE AS LONG AS THEY CAN
