my dad always said, a good pistol was like a good fire extinguisher,
you hope you'll never need to use it,
but you better buy top quality ,because you damn sure will need it to work,
if you grab it!
because you,ll need it desperately if you do!

theres always going to be a personally calculated,
balance you'll need to strike,
between
the bullets likely
destructive power,on impact
accuracy, over the likely useful range
range, limitations, and potential over penetration.
the need for 100% dependability,
cartridge capacity ,
recoil, ease of concealment.
and cost!
if your not comfortable carrying 100% of the time,
and if you fail to maintain constant awareness of your surrounding's,
and if your not willing to practice regularly,
your not likely to have it ready when its needed

but keep in mind YOUR LIFE may depend on a single rapidly. well placed shot,
stopping an assailant in his tracks, so ID suggest dependability and reasonable power,
hold a higher priority than cartridge capacity, and ease of concealment,
so a 6 shot 3"-4" barrel, 357 mag or 45 lc revolver may be a better choice,
than 8-10 shot 32, or 380 semi auto pistol!
and remember QUALITY the AMMO you select ,
and projectile design that will do all the damage on impact,
is critical

I love Hickoks videos, he has not lead me astray yet.

Also my favorite carry gun is a Glock 19, however recently I have been carrying a Sig P229 in 357sig as its the new toy in the herd... :)

A few years back I started rolling my own holsters, I hate doing it but I have gotten pretty good at it.
Makes life easy, I even roll them so the gun hides in my shape/pudge/spare tire. ;)

I need an everyday concealed carry and considering Glock 27. I want it since it's not that expensive, easy to maintain and take-down, and also manageable for follow-up shots.

I like Glocks, very simple, and not much going on with it should you ever meed to defend your self.

No fumbling with levers or safeties, point and click.

I got asked to discuss the advantages of power/penetration vs magazine capacity in selecting a defensive hand gun caliber.
and I can see where someone who is not all that familiar with handguns might have some confusion,
reading the various threads on handguns designed for hunting vs self defense use.
Id think the logical first point in that discussion would be to discuss.
the difference in what the intended use would be and the potential restrictions on your choices.
a self defense handgun, choice will by definition depend on what your intending to defend against ,
and the potential conditions and ranges you could reasonably expect too need to bring a handgun into play as a defensive weapon.
JEFF COOPER used to say, something along the lines of...
" a hand gun is a handy and concealable tool that,s designed to let you survive long enough to get to and use a RIFLE"
what he meant by that was that there was no handgun in existence,
that combined the power, accuracy range and power and/or magazine capacity of a decent military battle rifle like an M14
and if your life was on the line and you were going to fight and win or loose and die,
it would be ludicrous to select a handgun as your primary defensive tool.
for hunting use, moderately long range accuracy (25-200 yards)and the ability to punch through game anatomy, on larger animals like deer or elk, (in many states there,s a minimum caliber or energy level required, and factors like barrel length and caliber and projectile size and weight and velocity are defined, with a 357 mag being on the lower limit and some states require power levels only a hot loaded 44 mag or larger gun, like a 460 -500 S&W, 480 ruger, or 454 cassul, can deliver)
barrel lengths in the 6"-10" range are frequently preferred.
would take prime importance, concealment and magazine capacity are almost not a significant factor in fact there are several good single shot hunting handguns.
but for self defensive use against human criminals,
the prime factors in selecting the appropriate tool for the job.

mandates you carry and always have the handgun on you and easily accessible for it to be a valid choice,
and once employed it should be able to rapidly and effectively stop a determined attacker at usually very close ranges
(under 20 yards in about 95% or better of the cases according to decades of data.)
if you use the FBI data a 9mm- 357 mag, 40 S&W, 10mm 45 ACP, 41 mag and similar cartridges delivering 350 ft lbs too about 550 ft lbs
will be more than adequate in trained hands
ease of conceal-ability, dependability and legal liability may be concerns so you don,t want to employ,or select,
a handgun easily able to shoot though an opponent and then pass through several walls behind him and injure or kill people in adjacent rooms,
but you also generally want to have at least 5-6 shot capacity and certainly having 10-18 shot capacity might be advantageous,
even though statistically most confrontations are decided with less than 6 shots at under 15 feet.
I doubt you could go wrong selecting a high quality 357 mag , 45 lc or 41 mag revolver or something in a good 9mm, 40S&W- 357 sig, 10mm-45 acp semi auto, and barrel lengths in the 2,5"-5" length are frequently preferred.
because the tools are designed for wildly different conditions the question is a bit like comparing a corvette to a dirt bike . both may be transportation and fun to drive, but both are designed for a totally different application

My father was a CO he conceal carried ever where I preference in a defensive hand gun is sig saur p226 starfire rounds think they may be banded now at least here.

keep in mind that almost all these videos compare a 10mm using the rather standard pressure ammo and at times may show it compared to a 45 acp, but the 10mm was designed to use high pressure high velocity ammo, not the common over the counter lower pressure and lower velocity ammo that basically neuters it to just a bit over the 45 ACP.
if you do a bit of research youll find that you can push the same or very similar weight projectiles significantly faster in a 10mm especially with the 6" aftermarket barrel versions
I can assure you from personal field experience that a 200 grain hollow point 10 mm does a decent job on hog and deer hunts while a 45 ACP is a bit marginal

blue dot is a good powder choice in 10mm 200 grain loads

Speer10mmSupplmentData-1.jpg

its not always the fastest loads , but the more accurate and consistent loads that work best

Max SAAMI pressure for 10mm Auto is set at 37,500 psi
Max SAAMI pressure for 45 ACP 21,000 psi

a 45 acp operating at roughly 55% of the pressure with a similar projectile can,t reasonably be expected to compete with a 10mm loaded to its full potential.
keep this in mind an purchase ammo that provides you with the full potential benefits , the 10 mm can provide.
yes it will recoil more and mandate more practice... how much is your life worth..
if your not going to practice your unlikely to be proficient, getting an extra 200fps or more is not usually difficult with a similar weight bullet in a 10mm vs a 45 acp.

yes I'm a big fan of the 10-mm semi auto , provided the correct ammo is selected and used,
WHY? simply due to a good deal of in the field experience,
where I've proven it effective on deer and hog hunts ,
thus I have every confidence that if I were ever forced to defend myself,
I know the pistol is fully capable of getting the job done well.
but keep in mind only decently well placed hits on vital organs,
major structural bones and the central nervous system will prove effective regardless of caliber.
yes there are advantages in some selections,
but accurate shot placement and a good knowledge of anatomy is key to rapid incapacitation.
that applys to deer, elk and insane aggressive criminals

notice the difference in penetration, in the video below,
between hollow point and standard flat point projectiles,
the hollow point 10 mm 180 grain-200 grain projectile will tend too be.
more likely to provide rapid incapacitation ,
with proper shot placement and yet frequently ,complete penetration,
as well proven on deer

480 RUGER

500 MAG

I got asked if I would seriously consider a 460 S&W , 480 RUGER,, or 500 S&W mag revolver as a personal carry,
defensive choice?
could I make it work? hell yes!
would I select one as a first choice, for personal defense?
almost a sure thing , the answer would be NO!
WHY? a 10mm semi auto has the power required and double or triple the cartridge capacity,
far faster reload capability and its smaller and thinner and easier too conceal
the answer would depend on what, or what I thought,
I was considering I was likely to face as an opponent!
if your concerned with human aggressors you don,t need near the potential power, a mag big bore revolver provides ,
nor do you want too carry the weight or have the concealment issues,
and if you ever used it, your likely, too face both civil and criminal lawyers,
who might try to portray you as a lunatic gun nut, bent on murderous intent.
if your intention was personal defense against wild animals,
Id have selected a 6"-8" barrel mag revolver and shoulder holster.
concealment would be far less of an issue.

for personal concealed carry, the 45acp and 10mm quality pistol is in my opinion your best option.
both cartridges are well documented as providing effective results, provided the user can place shots well and knows anatomy.
Id select a full size pistol, as Ive never had issues carrying one concealed without it being obvious.

this video should be of interest especially to the guys that are not constantly using a handgun

I recently went with a local guy on a hog hunt
he had found he really enjoyed hunting with a handgun,
he was using a 45 acp he had borrowed from me,
hogs on private land are considered vermin and can be hunted year around,
theres a few local land owners that are very happy if you want to remove hogs from their property
being over 65 years old and a florida resident I no longer need a hunting licence.
now I really prefer hunting with a 44 mag revolver , as its been very consistently effective and while a 45 acp does work,
we all tend too favor tools we are familiar and comfortable with,
now I did not see anything worth shooting on this trip, none the less,
it was rather enjoyable getting out for a few hours and stalking,
through the abandon orange grove we had access too,
there was lots of fresh hog sign an we did kick up a few hogs ,
but nothing I felt worth hauling out.
what impressed my younger friend who has the proper licences etc.
was the fact that he had previous used a 9mm handgun on hogs several times,
and while well placed shots are effective they have frequently resulted in long trailing jobs,
with borrowed tracking dogs
(the land owner owns)
but its a P.I.T.A. to get the dogs,
so he appreciates the fact that hes seen much better blood trails and short trailing distances,
hes slowly gaining experience and has learned to hold his fire until dead certain,
of a well placed hit at under about 30 yards.
he brought up the subject of the differences hes seen,
this may not seem like it has much to do with defensive handgun selection,
but as hes seen, punching larger deeper holes in vital areas does tend to make a difference,
both the 9mm and 45 acp are not magnums ,
but theres been an observable difference, in the distance hogs travel after being hit well,
both choices are lethal, thats not the question.

I have been using--in the past---a 45LC single shot pistol with a 10 inch barrel for close up shots to 50 yards.

New carrier here. I have chosen a .45apc Glock and a Brave Response holster. I find it very comfortable and like it better than my Aiken Gear I started with.
