Brian, what is your opinion about the tuff stuff alternator and powermaster starter, are they good?(thats what i have on my camaro right now).

The Power master series of starter motors are well constructed.
I have personaly used them.

I have not used a Tuff Stuff alternator.
If its working, and supplies your electrical current needs,
Keep using it for now.

Big issue is substandard parts used.
Just dont know till you take it apart to investigate.
China keeps supplying parts that dont hold up longterm.

Yesss. I think I can only afford one alt at this point. The. Only issue is making sure my offset pulley fits on the alt. Ithe Procharger requires an offset pulley that pushes the V-belt outboard.

That and I really need to upgrade my wiring to 4 gauge all the way to my batt in the trunk. Searching summit fir a 4-gauge kit with trunk reach, but can't find any.

How long would it Delcoyou to build one of alternator def want one!

Is your Chevy Laguna still down, not running?
Can you show a picture of the alternator and pulley in use now?
What is your estimated total electrical loadsloads
?
Up to 120 amps, a Delco CS130a would be a good choice.
140 to 200 amps peak depending what field winding is used , when you max out an alternator, great internal heat buildup happens quickly.
Can only take peak current output loads for a short time period. 30 seconds or so.
Take me 1 week to build you a custom alternator for your Laguna.
Build it at night , work my day job as mechanic.
Delco 10 , 12, 15 si series of alternators have same diameter rotor shaft as Delco CS130a.
Your current offset pulley should work as now.
Will need to install pulley yourself.

Leaving London this evening. I live this place.

The 1973 chevelle is still down. The new ignition biz is in the way.

Yes I remember the alternator was extremely hot a few times.

I'd have to count. The greatest draw at idle will be the two electric fans. They probably draw 40 amps. Then there ignition 1 amp fuel pump 1 amp. Headlights. Not much else really. Water meth but that's only at high rpm.

I'd say 50 amps

I'll take a pic of my alt tonight when I get home.

Ok Dorian,

Headlights and tail lights on, figure 20 amp draw.
MSD Ignition, 1 amp per 1,000 Rpm, @6k, 6 to 8 amps.
High performance electric fuel pump, 10 to 20 amps.
Heater blower motor 5 amps.
Stereo sound system with giant amplifiers, 30 to 150 amps.
Dual high performance electric fans, like Flex lite, 50 to 75 amps.
Adds up quick, have not included power windows or other electronic gadgets.
Easily at 90 amp current requirement for an alternator for your 1973 Chevelle.

WOW!!! I did not realize my draw was that high! Yesssss, well, If you could get me an ALT that can work... that'd be great! Do I PayPal you?

Can I arrange for that 4 gauge wire (that grumpy pointed out on e-bay) to be sent to you to save on shipping?

I take it I can simply swap my pulley on there?

(no radio... ever ;-) )

Ummmmm. Wow!!!!! Thanks grump. I'm on it. What would you use as fuse? I was thinking a 60 amp audio fuse?
use fusable link thats what the factory used (but DO NOT shorten it) it is much smaller that audio fuse and wont burn for no reason lol
use a 8awg(they are pretty uncommon at that awg rating but can be found) fusible link with a 4awg wire.

or that
at o'reilly's for about 30$. availlable as 120 and 140A too.
But i think a fusible link is better since you can have it closer to the battery/starter inside of the harness

Mathieu, where is this O'Reilly? Is that like a chain or something? I like the idea of a resettable + visible breaker.

If he run the batt in the trunk a 4 ga wire may be a little small for a 200Amp alternator...(and i think a 140 amp is enough, the problem lie elsewhere"amp draw/unit heat or idle output")
50 amp fan not helping there.
My electric fan draw only 18 amp and they push 3300 cfm of air.. i think some fan upgrade could be helpfull especially for a 12si model alternator.. or maby upgrade to a cs-130 for greater idle output?
90+ amp at idle is a very big draw. 140amp 10si from tuff stuff put 80 amp at idle. Dont know what a cs-130 put at idle.(CS-130D put out 70 amp at idle) that still not enough...
When i say idle its 2000 rotor rpm or 800 engine rpm
Too low (drainning battery) voltage may be your ignition problem and high alternator heat may/can be an alternator blowing problem..
Dont know if your fan are on all the time.
Stock 12si are 50 amp at idle.
http://oljeep.com/gw/alt/Alternator_The ... #Section_3

My setup
Holley blue fuel pump -3 amp
elect water pump - 5 amp
elect fan - 18 amp
msd ignition - 6 amp
20 amp for lighting
5 amp for blower motor

am only at 57 amp(instead of 90).. it make a great difference about unit heat. and less heat will probably help the unit to last longer.
180watt of heat for 60 amp vs 405watt of heat for 90 amp(thats approx, using the link grumpy posted)

Yes Dorian,
You can reuse your current alternator pulley.
I will get started on your alternator 1st thing Saturday morning.
Build you a CS130.
I have Paypal. Send nothing till I am done building and ready to ship to you.
Target date is to have it shipped by next Friday.
What color do you want? Chrome plating will take longer, powder coat too.
I like high temp enamel paint, holds up very well.
Can paint it Yellow to match your engine. Black or Silver look good too.

Yes Dorian, you can ship the 4 gauge charge wire to me and I will ship it with your alternator.

Right, I found some 4 gauge over here at the auto shop. I'll still have to order that breaker from summit.

Ummm, I never really thought about a paint job. I suppose silver? As much as I'd like yellow, it'd be unlikely you'd replicate the shade on my block

Slight change of plans Dorian,
Came across and picked up used GM DELCO CS 144 Alternators today.
V8 Style.
Skip the CS 130 build.
Slightly bigger alternator a CS144.
Deliver 80-100 amps at engine idle.

Need to know if you have any extra adjustabilty in your bracket.
Center to center bolt pattern is 7.5 inches.
Checked against 10si, 12, 15si alternators today. Roughly 6.5 inch.
CS 144 Police Car Heavy Duty.

Have enough CS144 alternators present for a few builds.
Use 2 on my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix and my 1987 Corvette.

Brian

Ummm, that sounds good! I think my brackets can accommodate.

Awesome!

Brian, can you let me know what street address to have the circuit breaker sent to? If all right with you, I might have a replacement pro-charger belt sent there as well.

I found some 4-gauge here, so I should be all set with that.

I think plain, business silver is fine.

Send you a PM SHORTLY DORIAN.

The Silver paint I use looks very good. Used it many times. People are hard pressed to tell if its bare virgin cast aluminum or not. Stuff holds up very good.

Brian

Right, my MSD box has been in Belgium since Friday... stuck in customs... and no USPS number to call. Annoying! I want my car ready to go (ignition only) for Friday when I intend to push it through tech inspection. They better deliver by Thursday latest. @#$%@#$% USPS with no tel number!!!!! @$$hairs!

On the flip side, the movie producer backed out - he found a Ford Mustang with more space in the trunk and easier to drive  So I don't have to worry about that deadline.

Grmbl Stupid ignition box!
