Original 1957-'58 Pontiac 9.3 Axle Shafts Meet EvapoRust Remover Today

I will have to make a trip to the Local Dollar General Store or Wally World and look for Woolite to buy. I don't have it here tonite .
You don't have to buy the name brand, generic cheap stuff has the same active ingredient. Any drug store, dollar store laundry mat sells it

Get some charcoal and crush it, shake out the dust, add a teaspoon of Tide or Liq Dawn per gal of Erust. Fill a large funnel with the charcoal and loosely stuff some Cotton or a loose rag in the funnel bottom and pour Erust over charcoal. let it drain through slowly.
DO NOT USE Any charcoal with match lite or easy lighting , just use the cheapest plain coals or burn up your own wood.

Ok Richard .
If I add Petroluem products or Benzene accidental ?
What is Evapo then. ?
Embalming Fluid ?

Close but will react to organic tissues turning any lipids black and smell rancid when exposed aerobicly. Need ester of tetra chlorine to mimic

There is a much better way to explain this . . .thinking. When you don't use it you lose it and I don't work with chemistry from day to day. I can check with the catalog if you want to buy the simple 3 part student lab mix

Ok Richard .

Embalming Fluid ?
i honestly don't know beyond the fact that at a given amount of either or both will render the erust non effective because both are active ingredients with metal like covalent bonding. So iron oxide may just sit un reactive in the new solution

I added about 2 tablespoons of Tide HE Liquid detergent I had to Evapo Richard.
A little stirring and its Suds up.
About 96-97 % of superficial rust has been removed.
Face of axle flanges are dark in color.
Not as shiny as I would like but a 1000 times better than before cleaning.
Soaking again.
I am thinking of picking up Phosphoric acid from Home Depot.
It would brighten the steel up.

Brian, did you have 6 gal of Evapo? To treat?
No I don't have that much Evapo on hand here.
I don't think 6 gallons of Evapo is available in the area unless I special order it in.
On the store shelves just one or two 1 gallon jugs found each trip to buy it.
Harbor Frieght is in Peoria 45 miles away.
Summit Racing Sells EVAPO Rust Remover online. Single 1 gallon, 3-gallon, 5-gallons & a huge 55 gallon drum. 55 drum breaks the bank $.
Also special Free shipping on SUMMIT For Evapo 1-3-5 gallons.

Not sure how much more EVAPO I want to buy at present time.
Trying to save up $ per week..fill the Hotrod piggy bank.
Also have my eye on a few small items on Fleabay for the 1963 Grand Prix.
Oddities are showing up for sale Richard. Decent buying prices. Some rare.

Going to pull the 57-58 axles out of EVAPO. Wash off and dry. Photograph .
Save the Used Evapo.

My directions were for 1 TEASPOON of Tide per gal. of Evapo.
One Teaspoon = 5 ml. - one Tablespoon = 15 ml.
If you had 2 gal of solution, you should have used 10 ml not 30 ml. (There is an unwanted effect with too much Tide). The purpose of the Tide is 2 part. One is a wetter for Evapo to cut down through tough Iron oxide and the other is for a surfactant used break down any grease, oil and dirt to keep the Evapo active when dirty. Tide "he" is high efficiency for low suds required for top loader washers that otherwise could overspill with suds or interfere with the washer sensors.

I just don't understand. You could be using the discount codes and free shipping at Advance Auto like
I suggested, you would be getting it cheaper than Any other place . . . . . . .just saying

The Axles are Pretty Clean Richard.
I photographed.
Try and get before cleaning pictures up too.
From Junkyard Junk to Vintage Pontiac. 9.3 Drag Race Gold.

The Evapo Process I used needs refining . Results still very good.

at times I see guys forget that some long components like axles and cams that don,t easily fit in a 5 gallon bucket can be cleaned of mild surface rust, if you have fabricated a long narrow container, from PVC pipe
it would cost a small fortune to fill a 55 gallon barrel with chemical cleaners but theres a great deal less volume to fill in a 3"-6" diameter PVC pipe tank , and once cleaned you can store parts long term in an appropriate diameter container if you coat the parts liberally in oil and seal the container

a 3 ft long section of 3" pvc pipe with both ends flared with stacked 3"-4" and 4"to 6" adapters and rubber caps makes storing spare axles rather easy, one axle inserts from each direction

A trick of the trade shown to me, take a good plastic trash bag (33 gal). Pour in 1/3 gal of Evaporust and carefully put in your chrome trim or steel parts and seal the bag. Put it in a sunny place or a warm spot check in a few days. Condensation will collect on the parts and in time work the same as if the parts were submersed. The drawback is time. This method is done when you are not in any hurry and you need to recheck periodically. You use less solution, the solution is cleaner in the bag. When parts are clean you can spray with windex or any ammonia/water based cleaner and wipe clean - the solution stays clean longer.
