"hey GRUMPYVETTE,I just picked up 492 FUELIE HEADS FOR CHEAP..CAN I GET THEM TO PRODUCE 400 HP!" SURE you can get those heads to produce 400hp, but for the same money you could most likely make an additional 40-60 more hp with better aftermarket cylinder heads,TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED A GREAT...
great, now adjust the valves and take it for a drive to break in the rings and cam etc.
constantly vary the car and engine speed and loads,
and keep the engine rpms in the 2500 rpm-4500 rpm range for the first 30 minutes,
and it will lap in all the components rapidly.
Right just dis the first few miles in the car.
Everything is usable as long as you only open the first two valves in the carb.
When you use al 4's you spin spin spin.
We have got to sort some details :
Starter doesn't spin at 12.7 volts ... ( battery/ tester says it's good )only turns when booster is applied..
Serious leak comming from the front end of the gearbox ( I think we have damaged an oil seal when we took the engine out and left the box in the chassis.
You should see the tyre marks in our street!
Amazing how long it takes for rubber smoke to clear!!!!
"Starter doesn't spin at 12.7 volts ... ( battery/ tester says it's good )only turns when booster is applied.. "
what were all the bearing clearances set at?
what did you use as an end clearance too gap all the rings at?
what was the bore to piston side clearance? I,m glad to hear your engine runs and easily smokes the tires effortlessly ,
we tried to get your combo spot-on,
so it maximized the fuelie heads potential.
properly installed the originally suggested,
crane cam would have added an additional 500-600 rpm and maybe 30 more hp,
over the edelbrock hydraulic cam you selected,
but still that cam is a decent choice and easier to correctly adjust valves
The engine is fantastic...
All parts where set as they should have been ( I think) .
It's a new starter. But might be a dodgy one. Don't know.
Mass bolted straight on.
Plus as well.
Leak from between block and box is what worries me most....
Your combo is indeed straight on.
You and your forum will be mentioned several times during my students ' s thesis defence!
This is honestly one of the best rides and the most fun I have had in years!
Thank you all for being part of it!!!
were all glad to help where and when we can.
especially when we can help new to the hobby member avoid problem,s
and build a kick ass and take names old school chevy performance engine,
I'm glad too see some progress made from my knowledge gained in the process of ,
my mis-spent youthful obsession with having the fastest car in the area.
There you go.
She still handles well ( when you don't push the throttle too hard...)
Once the second valves open ....
Well you guys know!
Again most fun I have had in years@!!!
( and we have got bugattis Bentleys rolls Royce in the workshop)
I Guess you are right.
The immediate forfulness is also a plus.
Anything else we touch just takes forever to get right.
But damm this is so MUCH Fun !!!!
Rolling road should be for any weeks soon.
I want to know what the different inlet manifolds do.
Also the ignition timing and carb settings....
if you really want a big grin you need too remove with a wire brush
lets build a kick butt, high compression ratio, 496-540 big block chevy for that car.....
then we can keep the long black lines on the pavement going until...
you get tired holding the throttle petal down, on the floor board, or crack 70 mph
