I was recently asked to help a neighbor re-install an engine in his muscle car,
a 1968 road runner with a recently rebuilt 440 wedge engine.
for most of us, as we get more experienced , we tend to recognize potentially
difficult projects and with the experience we gain the knowledge to avoid most issues,
rather than just repeating or fighting through,
and repeating past mistakes

he had a chain jack
and his garage rafters are about 9 ft over the shop floor
the chain jack was anchored to a rafter and an engine plate on the intake base,
potentially making the install a total pain in the ass,
as the engine could be lifted vertically,
but any forward or rearward,
or sideways movement of the engine in the engine bay ,
would need to be done by moving the car,
and with the car needing to be rolled around under the lifted engine,
you could not then get under the car either.
I STRONGLY suggested we use his pick-up truck,
to go get my engine crane,
floor jack and 4 12 ton jack stands
and a mechanics creeper and drop lights,
and accessories, like the engine tilter
after we dropped the engine in place he was very impressed with how much easier use of the correct tools had helped and made the process so much easier and faster,
a process that might have taken well over an hour or more took less than 15 minutes with the correct tools, and involved so much less cussing and potential un-intended body and accessory parts damage

harbor freight has a fairly decent quality engine leveler
Ive used for several decades with no problems
(buy the 2 ton rated version
not THE 1500 LB VERSION
)
just remember the crank handle faces to the front of the engine and the threads need to be liberally greased with moly grease
, and yes you really should use a swivel hook,
on your engine crane with a very short chain
or screw chain link to your engine crane

$15 a damn good value,
I don,t see how you can not buy this if you work on engine installs
$39.99 (leveler) always use with the crank toward the front, is very useful
yes and an engine tilter and a 3 ton rated swivel hook,
$15 helps

yeah the crank on the leveler in the picture below is facing the wrong direction

can I hook a block and tackle to the garage roof beams to pull an engine?
" GRUMPY??can I hook a block and tackle to the garage roof beams to pull an engine?" while it can be done in some garages its rarely a good idea or safe to do, most prefab aluminum building roof beams might deform under the load, many wood beams risk cracking you certainly would not be the...
