knee replacement surgery

as many of the more frequent readers of this forum may remember,, I've had both knees replaced recently, the pain level even with meds they provide is extremely high
(I figured Id post an update.. and bitch about current conditions a bit)

now from talking with others who have had this work done, I can assume the pain level drops off slowly and while time frames vary wildly, between most people, most people say that within 3-4 months, the pain levels have dropped noticeably, and you can resume a semi normal life style.
I seem to be in the unfortunate group where the pain persists for about 4 months as only now is the first knee's pain level becoming mostly acceptable.
but keep in mind surgery between the two knees has been about 90 days, so just as the first knees pain is coming under control I had the second knee done, thus starting all over,
I had that first knee replaced in mid September 2022, I just had the other knee was replaced on December 29 2022, and the pain as I've learned and expected is basically making me rather miserable 24/7, doctors are very reluctant to provide serious amounts of pain meds, or at least in effective quantity, as they seem much more concerned with my potentially becoming a drug addict than with pain control. yes I do have what they say is adequate amounts of meds, but in my opinion I've built a tolerance, that effectively makes them almost useless, and swapping to a different med has proven to be useless in pain control in my experience.
I seem to spend a considerable time watching the wall clock, waiting for the appropriate time to slowly arrive when my next dose is allowed to be taken.
the bad part is even after its taken there's very little relief, and I damn sure don't want to take the meds more frequently than assigned due to fear Ill run out totally , before they will prescribe a replacement prescription.
the one minor exception is a muscle relaxant that seems to provide minor pain relief, but talking to several other people who have gone through this process, they all say its worth the pain, but you'll be almost 6 months to a year after the last knees done, before you see the benefits. I really had no choice as both knees were bone on bone, no Cartlidge left and I was in agony
I really want to work on my shop and cars, use tools etc. but just standing or walking without considerable pain, is a huge challenge currently

yeah, that seems to be the plan forced on me

Keep moving is the best thing you can do....besides giving those med's back to the Doc. I've had 6 knee surgeries and have a good understanding of your pain. The next surgery is a new knee...because like you said, it's bone on bone, and the agony is constant.
I did all there theropy and shit but the swelling would never go down, they drained it every two weeks for about 6 months. I finally told the Doc to let me do my own thing cause his way was obviously not working.. Told him that my knees and body were used to hard physical work
there entire life, not sitting around losing muscle. I knew it would be painful for a couple weeks, but I started to push through the pain as I knelt down on concrete and such lifting trans, engine blocks, crank shafts, ect..ect..ect.
Well two weeks of this and the swelling was gone...Doc said medically he could not say that was correct thing to do...but he could not argue
the fact that it did work..
The point is... your body is used to a certain life style and is uncomfortable any other way. With in reason, you need to strive to work it
back into that state. Push through the pain ( with in SAFE tolerances) and only take enough meds to curb the intense pain, BUT ABOVE ALL, KEEP MOVING.
Treat yourself as a wild animal... they don't get pain meds, They are tough.

I will leave this with a statement my Grandfather said to me when I was younger coming out of some surgery.

" SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP.....THERE'S MORE WORK TO BE DONE " :)

trust me! Im constantly being forced to do far more on these knees than I ever wanted to,
example
yesterday I had to walk to the garage,(about 40 yards) and back to get my battery charger and stand around doing the cable connections
testing etc, (30 minutes easy) because the battery was dead as someone left the lights on over night without me noticing, I thought my knees would pop out, but today they feel marginally better.
I figure ill be ok in 30-90 days max. and semi functional in 14-30 days

Yes, I have found through the years that standing on concrete for long periods of time does takes its toll
on the knees and feet.
Thats good that you are walking... keep moving is what heals the body. That and the mind set. I think you are correct that you will
be feeling better in a couple weeks. Hang in there Grumpy, you live in TEXAS now and from the stories I've heard...those boys are tough!!!!
(unless you live in downtown Houston) I've heard stories about that place too :rofl:
