trouble shooting trailer lights

keep in mind most trailer light problems are the result of corrosion, or bad connections or faulty grounds, you must have a frame ground on both the car and trailer and a connector between the two in the wire harness as the tow ball connection will seldom provide a solid electrical ground, and if your wiring is over a few years old, especially if the trailers stored outside, your usually far ahead to replace the whole harness and all the light fixtures and connections if you can,t locate the problem fairly easily with a multi-meter simply because those harness kits are usually reasonably priced , and long exposure moisture and sun light to cheap wiring and electrical connections usually results in defective wiring or connectors
